Ever notice totally random and unnecessary bleeping? I was watching Family Guy the other night and the station bleeped half of the word butthole. They weren't even calling someone a butthole, just referring to the actual body part. They didn't bleep out sphincter, though. I guess anatomically correct words are okay.

That particular station must be overly sensitive, because TBS and Adult Swim don't have a lot of bleeping.

Was it an "over-the-air available" station? The FCC has different rules for broadcast stations vs. cable delivered stations.

(in my opinion though, censorship is pretty much stupid though)

It was...the CW? It was after midnight, though.

The CW is a "broadcast" station in some areas... so programming sent from the central office would likely be defaulted to that standard. And... even though "butt" or "hole" are fine by themselves... the combination violates the following FCC standard:

The FCC has defined broadcast indecency as “language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities.” Indecent programming contains patently offensive sexual or excretory material that does not rise to the level of obscenity.FCC Website
