Pat Robertson told a 700 Club viewer today that he has “grounds for divorce” because his wife is not having sex with him regularly, speculating that she was “molested as a child” and needs serious psychological counseling.

The viewer told Robertson that he has “only been intimate with my wife a handful of times” and that “she has no interest in the bedroom,” adding: “I believe the Bible says withholding sex is wrong. Correct me if I’m wrong.”

Robertson agreed that the Bible condemns withholding sex and wondered whether the viewer’s wife has “psychological problems” resulting from childhood sexual abuse

You know, I do remember being taught that Jesus being pretty against divorce.  I also remember being taught that many early Christians couples took vows of chastity and did not divorce.  I really don't understand the logic chain.  Does this man actually have influence over many Christians?confuse

Pat Robertson is the one that needs psychological counseling... but, that said, he's not wrong on his assertion that the Bible has something to say about withholding sex.

1 Corinthians 7:4-5 - 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

They should be in counseling together. PR is a twit - but that's just my opinion.

I don't believe he has influence over many Christians, but that's just my opinion. Most of the Christians I know think he's a nut job and an embarrassment to Christianity.

It seems to me that if Pat truly believed the woman had been molested as a child, he should be recommending that the man be supportive of his wife and help her get counseling to overcome the trauma.

I agree the man has lost any hold he had on reality - he needs to follow Pope Benedict's example and pass the torch to someone able to lead.

I can't believe I'm about to defend Pat Robertson... but... the article WAS more than a little bit slanted compared to the video ON the article and what he actually said (this time).

One example: the article seems to imply that he suggested the guy get a divorce... when what he said was "that's grounds for divorce in the law"

Another example: the article implies that he blames her lack of sex drive on her being molested... when in reality he just lists several reasons that commonly lead to a lack of drive... and one of them is being molested, and suggests she needs to see a professional to see what's going on.

 

 

 

(He's still a nut-job though)

Sex is typically a healthy and important part of a marriage. So yes, I agree there is a problem with his wife not having sex with him. But the problem could be for many reasons. She resents him, illness, sexual performance issues, asexuality, homosexuality, not being attracted to him in particular, lack of romance, depression, etc. So there is no reason to immediately jump to she was molested as a child. But they do need to get down to the bottom of why they are not having sex. So I would suggest counseling particularly with a sexual therapist.

Agreed... and HE didn't. The slanted article did.

 

(jeeze... I still can't believe I'm defending him... LOL... but... if I'm about anything it's truth. So, even he deserves to be defended when lies are made about him {by the article... not by anyone here})

IMO, that's pretty much suggesting divorce. I just don't think he should have brought up divorce as an option.
