How do you apply the "Don't talk about things in front of people who weren't invited?"

To me, this out of all etiquette rules has the most gray area. Generally, I think the rule applies more to children who are still learning to be tactful and sensitive than it is to adults. As adults, I think we should have learned "Not everyone gets invited to everything."

For example, if I have a large party, I'm not going to talk about it in front of somebody who I'm choosing not to invite, but might have a reasonable expectation of being invited. But if I go to a museum with one friend, then I might talk about it with a different friend.

Thoughts?

Yes I mostly agree with your assessment.

with facebook this is really hard now though. Since people tag others and check in when they arrive somewhere and post pictures pretty much everyone sees exactly what you are doing and who you are doing it with. So it is hard to exclude people and have them not find out anymore.

So I err on the side of mostly just inviting everyone to parties or playdates or outings unless it is like a one on one thing.

IMO, Facebook doesn't count as talking about it in front of someone. I think of it as a public space.

I agree Ophelia. I don't think people should have to refrain from posting pics from a party or whatever. Just understand that the people will see they were not invited and then get butthurt.
