The other day RTL joined the site. Since the internet is a big place I was surprised to see him as we'd been members of another board previously. It turned out that it wasn't as much of a coincidence as I'd originally thought. It got me to thinking about how I came to be here and how others did as well.

In 2006 I was on the MSN home page. They posed a question 'do you have a secret'. I created an anonymous profile and posted my secret. It was very freeing to be honest like. They had several online communities that you could participate in with your alias and I contributed to the Marriage & Couplehood site almost exclusively.
I considered that my online 'home' for years. I had a RL self and then my online persona, an alter ego of sorts. My alter ego was by far the more free so needless to say I was hooked. Add to that, I enjoyed a bit of minor celebrity status on that board. Everyone knew me and a sort of board culture and mythology grew up around me. It was fun for a while but there were some personalities on that board that were hell bent on ripping people to shreds. After a while they were so successful that no one would post there and the board died a slow death. During my time on that board someone announced that a new board was being formed. I joined but never participated because I never seemed to be able to do two boards at once. To my mind it was like doing upkeep on two principle residences. It was easier to me to have a primary residence and a vacation home. The vacation home was the MM Invisapeeps.
I guess that was around '09? Not really sure of the exact dates but once M&C board was on it's last legs I migrated over to the MSN Manners board. The thing I liked most about that board was that there was plenty of familiar folks who'd also migrated from the M&C and I also liked that everything about the site itself was already familiar.
I'm not sure if I ever aquired the status of a regular contributor to that site before MSN announced that they were closing their site and that everyone should find new online communities. It was fun while it lasted but I was bummed cuz I'd JUST moved in. Lol
About that time I remembered that I could go to the Invisapeep site but PBJ sent me a personal invitation to the Geek Table so I went there. I met and made some good friends there but after a few months decided that site wasn't for me so I moved over to the site that I'd joined a few years before.
I must be some sort of bad luck for sites though because about six months after I started participating on the Invisapeeps board they decided to shut down as well LMAO! Ok to be fair to myself, they didn't really shut down. It was more of a split/move.
So from the old board sprung two new boards the Zeta board and this one. I decideded not to join either. I'd been on one board or another for the past six years and I felt that it was time to be more free and honest in my real life.
It was a good decision. It helped me grow. I even have a little bit of cross over in my friendships now so it's been a good thing.
After several months I got an invitation to come over to the Zeta board so I went to check it out. Short story short I think a large number of them had synced up their monthly cycles! That was some week! LMAO! I'd have stuck it out but it was too many shades of the M&C without the benefit of years of personal history and fun times to back it up.
A few weeks later I got an invitation from a different friend to join this site. Goodness I hope it doesn't shut down after I get moved in and comfortable.
I saw a link to an epic thread on the old Invisapeeps board on some site that I can't remember. I joined it, because the discussions about anything and everything were very good reads. Then when it shut down I joined the new Invisapeeps and this one.
I didn't want to risk losing "touch" with the peeps that couldn't access the Zetaboard (once I found out that some couldn't access it due to IT restrictions or whatever reason, that is).

I wonder why some boards are not accessible at work and some are? Is it the way the programming code is written? We don't have any kind of filter, except the sound of my boss's footsteps approaching my office.

Pretty much this.
I don't post much here but I swing through and check out what is going on. I get way more busy in the summer so have less computer time.

Some may not be recognized as social websites, or whatever the filter is set to.
As for how I ended up here, well, I created it so we wouldn't lose Peeps who couldn't (or didn't want to) move to the new board.

Thank you for this!

I started on Miss Manners and went wherever I found an open invitation....I have a LOT of downtime at work and I like message boards. I participate mostly in fun, fluffy threads but more often than not during a down time I will go check out several threads and by the time I get a feel for the convo and have something to say the phone at work rings or I get an order or other work to do and dont get a chance to say what I thought. I don't really like to post without reading the thread so I guess it would seem that I lurk a lot.
I some how stumbled on the Miss Manners board (and the others that were listed with it). I then moved to the first Invisapeeps board, but left that one because I felt it got too cliquey and sometimes just down right nasty. A friend told me it was shutting down, so I went to see if another board was starting up and joined this one and the zeta board, but soon after joining zeta, we got a new system at work and now I can't access it, which is fine with me. I really like this board!

That is pretty much me too. When the Peeps board moved from here to Zeta, I went along. But then Aardvark started this board for those who can't access Zeta so I joined here too.
We had a regular Mafia player who couldn't access Zeta at work so we started playing Mafia here.
And here we are.
I like this board. It is a slower pace than Zeta and much smaller so I feel like I know people better here.
Aardvark wrote:I created it so we wouldn't lose Peeps who couldn't (or didn't want to) move to the new board.
That was exceedingly cool of you. One question though...
If people were going to stay on active board rather than move to zeta, why shut down the old board?
Why not just leave it open and assign new mods?
---technically that was two questions.
I was one of the ones that can't access zeta board from work. I was sad (I'm not ashamed to say that I cried) and then Aardvark created this awesome place.
The reason I can't get in from work is because we have a filter to avoid getting into places that are time wasters (like FB, Tweeter and things like that) so apparently all the zeta boards fall into that category, most of the sites have "labels" that allow the blocking software to know what places are not allowed.
I was a part of the Miss Manners original board, and them stopped posting for a while and found the "new board".
I was part of the Miss Manners original board on MSN. I have tried to join zeta boards, but for some reason, it says I am blocked by admin. I have never received a confirmation email that I registered, so maybe I did something wrong.
I was on MSN Miss Manners board, moved to MM1 and then zeta with the big move. Des is one of my besties so when she couldn't post on zeta I came over here to hang out with her.
dqm, I don't think anyone really thought we would end up with another activeboard. There are privacy concerns regarding handing over a board to new mods. It all worked out IMO.
Privacy concerns? I really never understood how anyone can expect privacy on the internet, much less a public message board.
Concerns over who would have access to poster's IP addresses if it were to be turned over to new mods. This is the best way because people who join, know who the mods are. If they are brand new, then it is just like any other board. It isn't how you are phrasing it.
The old board was shut down because of technical issues. I don't think the Admin team was aware that Zeta was blocked for people.
This is correct. The Admin team did not test the Zeta site beyond their own access. There were technical issues that prevented the base administration functions from being turned over to anyone else - when Runaway left, the tech support at Activeboard did some special setup to turn over the permissions and access to Gills and Aqua, which they stated at the time would be a one-time deal.
Which is why when I created this board, I just used Grand Poohbah of Peepdom for everything, including the email account I set up. If I have to step down as Admin, I can easily hand it off to someone else if necessary.

:Q
Yep that's a Q

Like many, when MM2 decided to move to Zeta and it was discovered that some members would not be able to access the new MM2 home, I made an account here when Aardvark made this board.
I've been Potatochiplady on MSN, MM2, Zeta, and here.
I saw a link to an epic thread on the old Invisapeeps board on some site that I can't remember. I joined it, because the discussions about anything and everything were very good reads. Then when it shut down I joined the new Invisapeeps and this one.
Did you join when the thread about one of the member's crazy pregnant SIL got posted on an outside site?
I think it was wife-nurse-n-momof3's SIL who was trying to schedule Wife (and other family members) to come and take care of her but blocked the time out such that between work and helping out SIL, it came out to something like several 24 hour days in a row?
Privacy concerns? I really never understood how anyone can expect privacy on the internet, much less a public message board.

I still don't understand someone thinks their IP address is private, or what someone is afraid of if their IP address is made known. I realize it reveals a general area of where they are, but does it give a specific address, like street address or something? It's not like having an IP address enables you to hack into their bank accounts...or does it?
When I'm logged into the Admin account, I can download a list of forum users. It gives me your IP address and the country, state/province, and city in which it originates. I assume that there are ways to find out more about a user with that information, but I don't know how.
I did a quick Google search on how a person might use this information and I've found lots of sites on how to hack into a person's computer.
Just a reminder, I am the only one who can see your IP address (when I am logged into the GPoP account). I will not use your information to find you, cause you harm, or anything else that could possibly be done with it. I only refer to the forum members list on occasion to check for posters using multiple accounts.

This board reminds me of the old board. Except much slower of course. I really liked it. I miss Windy and a few other people. Being friends on fb isn't quite the same. I think the reason I always come back to the boards is the freedom to be honest about myself. And to have people tell me the truths about myself that I don't see.
I love my friends but we need each other too much to be truly honest. I tried changing. It was too scary. Too much to lose not enough to gain to make the risk worth it.
