Would you think to match your home-grown painting skills against a classical artist? Probably not, but that's just what a well-intentioned woman in her 80s did recently in Spain.

The picture on the left shows the original work, the one in the middle the pre-renovated fresco and the one on the right shows the damaged painting.
The three photos above tell the tale. The image on the left is the original work, a century-old oil painting of Christ called "Ecce Homo (Behold the Man)" that was painted on a column inside a church near Zaragoza, Spain, by artist Elias Garcia Martinez.
Over the years, the work began to deteriorate, as shown in the second image. According to the Centre de Estudios Borjanos, the unnamed amateur artist (without permission from the church, needless to say) thought she could improve the work and set to work with paints and brushes. The third picture is the result.
The BBC reports that the woman realized her mistake and contacted Juan Maria Ojeda, a city council member in charge of cultural affairs for the area. "I think she had good intentions," Ojeda told the BBC.
A team of art restoration experts is reportedly examining the painting, will quiz the woman on what materials she used in her attempt, and will figure out how best to proceed.
"If we can't fix it, we will probably cover the wall with a photo of the painting," Ojeda told the BBC.
The BBC Europe correspondent described the painting's current state as resembling "a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic."
While Martinez's work was not considered especially valuable, the BBC reports that the painter's granddaughter had just donated a sum of money to restore the peeling image. Apparently the helpful would-be artist took it upon herself to get involved without knowing that, but if she had just waited, the work would have been fixed properly.
What do you think of the resulting artwork? Do you feel sorry for the woman, or should she have known better?
I am just laughing so hard I have tears in my eyes. It is terrible that the painting might be ruined but I giggle every time I think about Graffiti Grandma!

So sad, so very sad. Well intentioned Grandma didn't think things through very well. I hope they do a follow up of whether it could be restored now or not.
I saw this yesterday. How does someone who is untrained think they have the skills to touch up a 100 year old painting? It looks so bad, how did she get that far before she realized it wasn't going well? Also, like Kapper, I may have a small part of me that is laughing at graffiti granny. I'm so ashamed.
I guess it was go big or go home. Once you start and you go, oh shoot, this doesn't look right, let me try this and then that and before you know it.....oops!
This story seems so much like a joke, it's hard to believe it's real. Maybe that church needs better security. Not that I think she should have touched the painting to begin with but why wouldn't she have just filled in the empty patches rather than redoing the whole face. Of course Idon't know how recent that middle picture is... Maybe she is demented.
At first I thought it was a joke as well, then I read the article... It just looks sooooo bad, I mean how couldn't she see that it was getting worse and worse.
I'm laughing so hard that I'm changing that to my screen saver so I can be full of mirth everytime I see it. I think we should all draw the picture and post the results. See who was able to do better than Graffiti Granny.
Mine would be a stick person. I have always wanted to do artistic things but lack the talent. Something tells me she is a lot like me, except she doesn't know she lacks talent lol. I can't draw, paint, work with clay, ect. I have thought about taking up stained glass. It is artsy and I think I could get the hang of it.
This is awfully funny. I can kind of picture grandma thinking, how hard can it be? imagining that she could just fill in the damaged areas like a paint-by-number thing, saving all that money for a restorer...
Of course, if the original painting was a real treasure I probably wouldn't be so amused. And I'm sure it's a treasure to the people of the church.
You can paint, oh wait you can't...lol don't mean to pick on your painting skills but Jesus never wore a ladybug jacket, it was a watermelon cape......

Here is an update. The church could spend the money to fix the painting, but now it may have to go to lawyer's fees instead. Calling the lady "The local artist" seems like a bit of a stretch.
A Spanish woman who made headlines worldwide for her botched attempt to restore a 20th-century painting of Jesus Christ says she has hired lawyers and wants royalties from the fees church owners are charging visitors, according to the daily Spanish-language newspaper El Correo.
The local artist, 80-year-old Cecilia Gimenez, initially defended her volunteer work saying she was restoringthe decaying "Ecce Homo" ("Behold the Man") portrait becauseno one else would. The before and after pictures went viral across the globe and tourists began arriving in droves -- but very few were leaving donations according to Ars Technica. The sanctuary's owners, the Santi Spiritus Hospital Foundation, reportedly made $2,600 in four days from visitors wanting to see "Ecce Mono," or "Behold the Monkey" as it's now called, Ars Technica reported.
I would have an anxiety attack and have to take to my bed too if I were Grandma. She ruined that painting and the church could conceivably ask her to pay for all the restoration efforts. On the other hand the fresco was in very bad shape before she "touched it up".
