Has this become the norm? Player sponsorships
Permalink

In the last few months I have had at least 4 kids come by to ask about having my business sponsor them to play on a sports team.  No, this is not a team sponsorship, this is an individual kid sponsorship.  I do not see this as a giving back to the community nor advertising opportunity, it is helping ONE child pay their dues to play on a team.  Has them become normal or just in my area?

I've never heard of individual sponsorships for players. I guess these are community sports teams they are playing on?

Would that type of donation be tax deductable? I dont think I'd sponsor an indidiual child.

I had never heard of them until this year either. They are community teams. I have sponsored actual teams before. To me this is just a kid walking in with their hand out. They have done nothing to "sell" themselves to me on why I should give them money. It just feels....wrong.

It's pretty normal where we live. The ones you see most often are skiers, snowboarders less often, skateboarders and mountain bikers. They do the same thing the FFA kids and the 4H kids do.

It's rare to go into a business that -doesn't- have sponor photos on the ego wall.
I'm sitting here and I can't think of one established business in town that doesn't have one. When I go out tomorrow I'm going to look.

dqm, but those are all for individual sports/competitions. That I would find less weird. What I have encountered is a child is on a basketball team and is seeking out individual sponsorship in order to pay the child's fees to play. I have only seen team sponsorships in this case and would be much more willing to donate to a community team than an individual member of the team.

Yeah... on a team sport it seems weird.

In the cases of "individual" sports (like, as was mentioned: snowboarding, or skiing, or skateboarding, or bike competitions, et cetera) the individual IS the "team". It's a "team" of one, where only that person wins or loses... so that's how you support the "team".

I always would suggest "support the team".
