Woman Glued Toddlers Hands to Wall to Better Beat Her Recieves 99 Year Sentance

This is a tragic situation for the whole family.  This woman should have never had children.  Now they are effectively orphans.  I may be completely wrong, but Ms. Escalona's mother probably didn't do that great a job raising her.  Now she'll have five grandchildren to care for.

DALLAS -- Elizabeth Escalona, the 23-year-old mother of five who admitted to gluing her daughter’s hands to the wall and beating her as potty training punishment, was sentenced Friday to 99 years.

In announcing the sentence, state District Judge Larry Mitchell said Escalona "savagely beat" her child and deserved to be punished.

During closing arguments earlier Friday, prosecutor Eren Price told the court to give Escalona's children peace by knowing she would never come walking through their door in the future.

The prosecution showed photos of the apartment where Jocelyn Cedillo was glued to the wall, saying "We have to imagine what it was like."

Defense attorneys said Escalona needs anger management and treatment. They painted her life as a miserable one of abuse and drugs.

Escalona faced from probation to life in prison, and prosecutors had sought 45 years behind bars.

Very often people who abuse children have been abused themselves.

But unless she's psychotic (and since she testified in her own defense it appears she is not) she had many choices however unhappy and desperate she was. She chose to brutalize her children.

There are far too many people who make this choice and are perfectly capable of knowing right from wrong. It is an outlet for anger and violence where the victims can't fight back and are unlikely to be able to report the abuse. There is very little protection for children in the charge of such people, so this is one area where I think heavy punishment, including long terms of imprisonment, should be imposed, both as a deterrent and to prevent the perpetrator from getting access to children again.

And she should never be allowed contact with her kids again, period.

That poor child. Well, all of them. Also, dang she's young for having 5 kids. I imagine the stress of that didn't help, but she definitely made her own decisions, and one of them was to abuse her kid(s). Not much sympathy here for her.
