Cooking with alcohol

I was watching a Chopped episode and an alcoholic refused to taste one of the essential ingredients, some sort of alcohol, because he was an alcoholic.  I wondered if that carried over to him eating foods cooked with alcohol because the alcohol would be cooked off but of course you can taste it in the food.

The alcoholics I know would both taste (if preparing) and eat food with alcohol in it I was wondering what the experience of you folks would be.

I have no idea but would be interested to know as well. I would think they would avoid it all together. I would if I had a problem with alcohol. For many alcoholics just a sip can lead them right back down that road. I would guess some can handle it but most wouldn't try it.

I have read that some alcholics have to avoid even mouthwash containing alcohol, so it would stand to reason that they'd avoid tasting raw cooking ingredients that contain it. The vanilla I use is perserved in rum, (i think) so no raw chocolate chip cookie dough for the alcoholics.

I never thought about it, but I can see that the taste of alcohol might be a trigger for folks who are addicted to it.

Alcohol is an ingredient in lots of things I cook and bake, especially at holiday time. Do y'all let people know there's booze int he fruitcake or whatever?

I read somewhere that the alcohol does not cook off as much as people think. I don't have any source for that, but now I am curious enough to Google.
