Ok I'm on FB trying to get math help from my smart friends and I come across this picture and captions from one of my not so smart friends:

See to me x=4 is not enough information to graph a line.  If Y=0 then yes it's horizontal but if Y is any number greater than zero there is a slope.

I don't get it and not getting it is hanging me up from explaining the next set of problems.

The next set of problems:

graph each equation:

x=-7

-7 is not a graph it's a POINT.  You need two points to make a line.  Darn you algebra!  Darn you to heck.

For each equation, tell whether its graph is a horizontal or a vertical line.

y= -1

answer in the back... horizontal

If y=-1 is horizontal then x=4 can't be horizontal.

Can it?  I mean it seems to me like it SHOULD be but logically they can't both be so I must be wrong.

This time with math homework.

You'd think that by my FOURTH child I'd know all these algebra problems.   Gaaaaah!

For each equation, tell whether its graph is a horizontal or a vertical line. (typo in the math book.  I may not know math but I can punctuate)

x=4

I assumed that Y is zero in which case any question that asks for X is horizontal and any question that asks Y is vertical.  It doesn't make sense any other way but the problem is we've checked the odd questions in the back of the book and the theory does not hold.  On top of that we need to graph more equations that we are clearly doing wrong so that means at least 4 wrong answers.   ahhhhhhh

Take made up points on the graph for y and graph it that way. For example: (4,4), (4,-2), (4,6). I think you need at least 3. See what the line looks like. That's how we did it with my son.

It's been a little bit since we did it so I am going by memory.

 That's the problem.  All it says is x=4 or y=-7

They want her to draw the line or at least know what the line looks like when all they've provided is one point.  You need at least two points to make a line.  I thought I knew what the other point was (zero) but then I checked it by an answer that they'd given and my way and their way can't both be right.

Meh, we've moved on.  Writing is so much more enjoyable.

in x=4, y is any/all numbers. therefore, the graph is a vertical line where x=4

Oh my niece just explained it to me in a way that I could understand it.

It's not zero

I wish they would just freaking SAY that.  This is only my fifth time taking 8th grade algebra.  How do they expect me to remember that?

biggrin

This is a vertical line. If x=4 then it's any point Y along that line. And I don't see a typo in the problem?

There's no typo. I just wanted to move on to another subject and I was being picky.
