Complaining about the food after you’ve eaten it all

Last weekend I went for brunch with a few friends. At some point during the proceedings I noticed in passing that the couple at the table next to ours received their order. He got everything but the kitchen sink: a large omelet (for which this place is known), hash browns, side of bacon, pancakes, etc. She got a small bowl of cottage cheese and one of fruit.

Didn’t pay any further attention to them until I became aware of a loud discussion between kitchen sink guy and the waitress (well, he was the loud one). KS guy was unhappy because his food had been cold and therefore had not tasted good/inedible. He didn’t think he should have to pay for it. I couldn’t help but notice that his plates looked like they had been licked clean which I thought was odd if the food tasted so bad.

Apparently KS guy was referred to the manager because off he went to bitch and moan to someone else and, it seems, in the end did not have to pay for his meal.

I must say, if the food tastes that bad why would you eat it all? Why wouldn’t you complain immediately? Why would the manager not want to see evidence of the nasty food if the customer does not want to pay for it?

One of my friends said that he had seen KS guy and his companion share the food and figured it was just a scam. After all, paying for cottage cheese and fruit is cheaper than paying for an omelet, hash browns, pancakes etc.

Your thoughts?

I agree with your friend that it was a scam. If the food was cold, it would have been sent back immediately otherwise. The loudness of the guy is a tip off, too - he figured they'd do anything to keep him from making more of a scene.

ITA. That was a scam. I have - very rarely - sent food back. I take a bite or two, and then politely explain my issue. I have never ever had a problem getting my food replaced. And I don't want or expect my food to be comped - I just want new food.

It was absolutely a scam.

It's people like this that cause restaurants to put in cameras. Personally, I think they should have been arrested and prosecuted for trying to commit fraud.
