Former Playboy Co-ed, Now Teacher, Stirs Controversy

DALLAS, TX -

A Spanish teacher in Texas is at the center of controversy after students and parents found out about her past work for Playboy. Playboy named Cristy Nicole Deweese "Co-ed Of The Month" in February of 2011. Now, she's teaching Spanish for the Dallas Independent School District, and she's the talk of the town.

 

Deweese appeared in a playboy modeling video and posed for pictures when she was 18-years-old. Just a few years later, she landed a high school teaching job.

 

And now at 21-years-old, she's caught-up in a controversy after the community learned about her revealing past with Playboy.

 

So far, the reaction has been mixed.

 

"Students are looking for character, role models, what to look forward to, education, but not something negative like that. No," parent Perry Washington said.

 

"I think it would be more distracting for the boys. They wouldn't see the teacher as a role model like she's supposed to be," opined Esmeralda Landa-Soch.

 

"She's a really good teacher. She's really nice and really good at teaching Spanish and yeah she never mentioned anything about it," student Zapora Long said.

 

"I felt like as long as she can do her job, let it ride," said Chanattra Long, her mother.

 

Education officials say that this is a gray area for the district. Right now they're looking at its policies and reviewing the code of ethics for teachers to figure out what to do. If anything, Deweese hasn't talked about the issue publicly.

The whole 'it will be more distracting for the boys' is nonsense. If she's young and beautiful, the boys who would be distracted because of her modeling history will be distracted anyways. If it's that much of a concern, maybe they should only hire people over 40, allow no one to wear makeup, and allow only unflattering clothing.

I think it's pretty stupid as well, Cactus. Basically for the reasons that winds said.

And I hated how the press called her being in Playboy "a mistake". It wasn't a mistake. It was a choice (and at the time, a perfectly valid, and legal, one to make).

I also hate how they (the school board) are basically questioning her moral standing over this. It's a naked human body for goodness' sake. It's not like she was a child molester or thief or murderer. People that can be naked can be moral too.

I agree with you Richard!

She might have done it to make some money to finish her education. Why is that wrong? Why she showing her body makes her an unfit teacher?

ITA. It's not illegal and, frankly, it's none of the school's business. I do think that she needs to take care to dress professionally and modestly, but I think all young, attractive teachers need to be extra careful that their appearance is more neutral.

TBH, it would be none of the school's business if she was still modeling for Playboy.
