We've been having major wind gusts for the past two days. The power flickers, but doesn't actually go out. I didn't think anything of it when I left for church this morning. As is my habit, I left my purse at home, since I always use the keypad on the garage door opener.
Well, wouldn't you know it, but the power went out during church and didn't come back on by the end of the service. PM ran over to the house to grab something for our friends and couldn't get in, because he had left his keys at home this morning, too! Normally, he always has them, but his hands were full and he figured he didn't need them. We were locked out!
Luckily for us, our friends were still at church and suggested we go out to lunch. We liked that idea, but AB's carseat was locked in our garage! I experienced Divine Intervention as I suddenly remembered seeing a car seat down in the nursery room. We had to stop at Walmart for baby food, a spoon, and some emergency diapers, but we ended up having a very nice afternoon with our friends.
The power was back on when we got back, hallelujiah, but when I run to the grocery store tomorrow, I am stopping to get a spare house key to hide somewhere!

You could also try a lockbox. It secures to the doorknob and cannot be removed, you just enter the code you set it with to open the compartment and retrieve your key. I have also seen people attach lockboxes to a part of their vehicle for their spare car key, usually hanging somewhere under the car.
I have used "biker" wallets for years (the ones with the chains on them which attach to a belt). I keep my spare house keys in my wallet, and since I am always wearing my pants when outside, I am never locked out.
I hope you were able to find a good hiding place for your spare key!
