Thoughts on floating swimsuits
Permalink

We are planning to go to the beach next month, and being the paranoid anxiety ridden first time mom that I am, I'm looking to buy a floating swimsuit for LO.

I've seen a couple on amazon and I'd like to know your experience on them.

Do they run true to size?

Are they effective?

Has any of your kids used one?

Did they like it?

LO is 14 months and has never been in a pool.

Thank you in advance!!

Neither of my kids had these as babies, although we did start them out in mom and me swim/water safety classes at that age. I was neutral on the subject of flotation devices/suits  but DH felt they gave a false sense of security for both parent and child and was opposed to it.

They both grew to be very good swimmers and competed until they graduated from high school.

 Thanks!

The false sense of security is something I worry about as well, however we do not have a pool, nor we hang in any place that has them. However if we ever do, how well will she remember being able to float without aid?

I just worry about every possible scenario. I want to put LO in a swimming class, but DH told me that he was going to teach her, yeah right buddy where???

Then we got the new car and we don't have any extra funds right now to put it in a class.

Never really done the floating swimming suits. Most people I know use the puddle jumpers. They are pretty awesome. They have taught almost all the kids I know how to swim.

I've never heard of a floating swimsuit but I can figure it out. When I was very little I had to wear this thing... it had a belt around my waist and a rock hard styrofoam bubble on my back. It was really uncomfortable but I had to wear it until I was the ripe age of four years old. Looking back it was actually dangerous, it was hard to get my face out of the water with that bubble thing!

Yay for teaching your wee one to the water. It was one of my greatest pleasures as a kid. My parents taught me but we also had a pool so it was a daily thing. I think swim classes are a super idea.

I'm with the Frooty one. I've never heard of "floating swimsuits" either. When it was teaching time for swimming I thought the only option was those inflatable "water wings" things or the Styrofoam belts too!

They still use those in swim lessons around here except they are not as hard. They are more like foamy and you can remove or add more or less according to their swim ability.

Puddle jumpers are considered coast guard approve life jackets too so they function as that as well.

Thank you all for the input.

DH freaked when I told him about the possibility of LO jumping to the pool thinking she had the floating suit on. We looked the Puddle Jumpers and although I like them the lower weight limit is 30 lbs, LO is hardly 20 lbs, she's on the skinny side and, since we are not really tall, she's not very tall either.

How little were your kids when they used the puddle jumpers?

And here's a pic of the floating swimsuits, the upper part has inserts that allow the kid to float, and they are non removable:

If it were me, I'd get a wee kid sized life jacket. Although that floating swimsuit is adorable, oh.. do you know where on the suit the floaty bits go?

I'm thinking about the life jacket as well.

The floating bits are in the chest and back areas of the suit, pretty much like a vest the difference is that, since the suit is skin tight it doesn't ride up the neck.

Mine did not use puddle jumpers. By the time I thought about getting them they were already over the weight limit. We use the blow up arm swimmys and the blow up rings mostly.

I also like the idea of a life jacket or something else that has to be "put on".

That "floating suit" looks too much like a Onesie... and could be confusing.

I totally agree, we'll look for something for her this weekend.

At the very least a blow up ring, we are not planning on letting her near water by herself at all, but always better safe than sorry!

Is she too big for those cool floats that the kids put their legs in the holes and it floats them around? I used those with my kids when they were babies and it got them used to the water but kept them from getting in their face and they felt pretty secure in them and I did not have to hold them the whole time. Just kinda stay near the float in case it tipped over or something.

They look like this

That's exactly what DH wants to get!

We've seen some that even have something built into then to provide some shade to the baby.

I don't see weight restrictions so it'll probably work :D

Yes! Those are awesome! I think they will work out best to get her introduced to the water. Then you can take her out and hold her in the water a bit too once she is comfortable and that is how you kinda get her on her way to swimming because from there you can transition to arm swimmys or a ring or a puddle jumper.

When I was teaching one of the kids I babysat to swim we had a Nike one piece. It was a tank top style with shorts. I liked it the best because the air bag things were set down farther than the foam ones. He could still see and he was kept more up right and felt more confident.
