PSA: I saw this on some news sites and wanted to pass it along. http://www.nicuhelpinghands.org/lend-a-helping-hand/angel-gowns/
It is some volunteer women who take donated wedding dresses and re make them into angel gowns for babies that die at the hospital. They are beautiful little white gowns the parents can pick out and put their baby in. It may be the only outfit the baby ever wears. Some choose to bury the babies in the gown. Others keep it forever as a memento of their baby's so short life.
This really touched me so I am going to donate my wedding gown to them. I am getting it from my mom this weekend. She said she will donate her wedding gown too. They can also take light colored prom or bridesmaid dresses. They take them apart and re use the satin, beads, lace, pearls, etc. They also accept monetary donations. They are wanting to ship the gowns to NICUs all over the country so they can help everyone.
The mothers said it touched them so much to be able to put their baby in something special instead of just a blanket or towel which is what they usually only get for the baby. They make them in all sizes from tiny preemies/stillborns to newborns.
If you have an old wedding dress sitting around gathering dust, please consider donating it. Chances are your daughter is not going to want to wear an old dress. Most girls want new dresses. But I think they said they will send you back a cutting of the dress for memento sake if you indicate that is what you want after taking apart the dress.
My DD is going to want a new dress. My style and hers are very different. So there is no point in saving it for her. She might not even be the size I was when she gets married. I hope she actually isn't because I was a bit chunky ha!
That sounds awesome. I saw a blip about it but didn't know the full deal. Very sweet that you are going to participate. If I had a wedding dress, I would give it very serious thought.
This is a lovely thing to do for families who are in such pain. Many times wedding dresses never make it out of those archival boxes. You are so right that many girls would not dream of wearing their mother's wedding dress.
