Yeah... "I'm a good {insert religion of choice}" instantly loses my interest in a political candidate.

ETA: and I don't religiously discriminate... Christian, Muslim, Atheist, Agnostic, Wiccan, whatever... use it as criteria for why I should support you and you lose points (now, if EVERYONE loses those points, I would still vote for one of them... but I'd toss the religion aside and vote on job merit).

I'm in Alabama. If I held to that rule, I'd vote for nobody ever. The first candidate who talks about what a good Buddhist he/she is will totally get my vote, though. Just because of guts.

I asked what his stance on transvaginal ultrasounds being required to get an abortion. First, I had to explain to the caller (a woman) what that was. She had no idea, so she actually put him on the phone with me. He was pretty nice. He said, "I'm pro-life, I think everyone should have the right to control their own bodies." and I said, "Um...that's pro choice." But he did say he would vote no to a bill to require women to get transvaginal ultrasounds before an abortion, but he wanted women seeking an abortion to be offered an ultra sound. So that's not too bad.

Yeah. I love a lot of things about my state, but in some ways it can still very frustrating. Judge Roy Moore put a monument to the 10 commandments on the courthouse lawn. While I find that obnoxious, I don't particularly care. But Judge Moore and others are rabid anti-choicers and they are just pernicious, and that I do care about.

Bear Bryant has a cult-like following here. From what I know (I'm no expert) he was apparently a very morally upright man. Many of the young men who played under him have gone on to do good things. Anybody who can claim any tie to Bear Bryant, no matter how thin, toots that horn.

wouldn't someone from Alabama vote against someone who had the opportunity to play for Bryant, but didn't? You'd have to have one heck of an excuse to not play for god, I think.

That's what I'm wondering. They had some vague "to focus on his studies" or something. It was a weird thing to bring up. I guess they are just banking on the magical words "Bear Bryant".
