Christmas tree inspiration needed
Permalink

My local library is having a fundraiser that involves decorating 2' Christmas trees that will then be auctioned off.  There will be judging based on the categories "most beautiful", "traditional" and "literary".  Because I'm a putz (and on the fundraising committee) I will be decorating 2 or 3 trees.  My ideas don't fit any of the categories, which got me wondering.

What kind of tree would you consider traditional?

Any ideas on a "literary" tree?  (I've already ruled out ghosts and Tiny Tim's crutch.)  I scanned my bookcases, but since 90% of the books are non-fiction, there's not much inspiration there.

Candles, pine cones, popcorn strings, cranberry strings, ginger bread men on strings, etc.

As for beautiful...

The past couple years our tree has been one of the fake white ones that has the multicolored lights with blue, purple, and gold ornaments.

I don't have any suggestions for a "literary" tree... but for a non-traditional one I have a few ideas:

> You could make it out of caramel popcorn (if you are REALLY crafty, and have oodles of time, you could even make the caramel super firm and form branches to make it more than just "cone-like").

> if you can find enough of them, you could make it out of empty toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes (cut and taped as needed)

> You could even combine the previous two suggestions! (branches & tree trunk out of tubes, "leaves" out of caramel popcorn)

> You could also get one of those foam cones from a craft store and make it out of lollipops (flat ones or ones like "Dum-Dums" with colorful wrappers).

Literary trees:

Harry Potter- owls, tiny brooms, wizard hats, etc. You could probably find lots of those types of items at post Halloween sales.

Lord of the Rings- gold rings, swords, cloaks, horses, axes, elven foliage, etc. You could even theme these to locations (Lothlorien, etc)

Austen- pastel Victorian ornaments, books, lace, dresses, small items specific to different stories

Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Roald Dahl, etc

Kiddie lit:

Mo Willems- pigeons, pigs, elephants, bunnies, etc, from his various stories.
etc

Olivia the pig- lots of red and white fashion accessories

Sounds like a lot of fun!

yeah, witch's cauldon, swords, ghosts, vials of poison....   lol

thanks for the suggestions.  I hadn't thought of Roald Dahl or Harry Potter.  I've been trying to envision enough things for the Wizard of Oz.

There are the comedies, too.  All the puckish delights of A Midsummer Night's Dream would make such a whimsical tree!

The first thing that came to mind about a literary tree is Doctor Seuss...

As for traditional I'm thinking purely Christmas colors red, white, green, white lights. Round decorations, maybe some that look like icicles (I can't think of the name of the figure right now, English fails me this early in the morning without coffee) some tinsel, nutcrackers.

I'll come back after I've had my coffee!

For a literary tree, could you print out some miniature covers of classics? I don't know how practical that would be, but I'm envisioning tiny little books in my head. For garland, you could make chains from paper printed with book excepts. Maybe soak the paper in tea or something to give it an antiqued look.

If you want a Christmas literary tree, what about The Polar Express?
