Each moderator has their own twists but in general:
There are x mafia randomly assigned by the moderator. There are townspeople. There's a sheriff and an FBI person. There may be lovers who may be both mafia or townspeople or one of each. All assignments are sent by PM to each person. The mafia know who each other are; the rest do not.
During the day phase, the particpants vote to see who gets lynched. The first round, we basically guess as to who's who. The goal for the townsfolk is to kill the mafia. The mafia try to save themselves. The first person killed becomes the head nurse/ghost. Each person killed then becomes a nurse/ghost.
During the night phase, the particpants are sleeping, so not much happens on the board. Behind the scenes is where all the action happens. The mafia get together to decide who they are going to kill. The ghosts get together to decide who they are going to save. If the mafia selects the person the ghosts did, then no one dies that night.
Strategy: I haven't figured that out. Each game is different. Each player has their own style but that can change. It helps to keep track of who's voted for whom, who's steering the voting, who's changing votes.
I've found that the more I play, the more I "get". Just reading other games hasn't helped me all that much.
So right now I just need to keep an eye out for a PM telling me what role I will be playing? I did go back to check out other games but I don't think I'll actually get it until I play a while..lol

If you don't get a PM, you're a townie with no special role.

If you are mafia (sometimes we start in day phase and you won't get a chance to talk to your teammates first): Generally, it's best to not all vote for the exact same person to lynch, but there will always be exceptions. Some mafia like to either vote for each other or get in early on what might become a landslide vote against another mafia to seem more innocent.
And LP can answer any specific questions during the game if you're afraid they'll make you sound guilty or give away a role to ask in the thread. She helped me a lot when I got my first special role in her game :D
