What to wear to 6pm wedding?

I don't really have any dressy clothes and most weddings I have been to are the early in the day/cake/punch kind of thing. This is a wedding at 6pm and a buffet dinner type reception after. As far as I know, everything will be indoor. I'm going shopping tonight - what do I need to be looking for?

We have a 6 p.m. wedding in July to go to.
I'm planning on getting a maxi dress with a shrug (in case the AC is working well, and to hide my bingo wings).

How long is your dress? Do I need to get one that goes past my knees or does it not matter?

Hmm, I don't know. I don't think I have ever been to a wedding where the ceremony did not start mid afternoon.

Church wedding - I don't know the denomination other than not Catholic. It's for a coworker of my husband's so I don't know the couple (or anyone else who will be there) either.

I didn't get mine yet but I've been looking at them when I'm in a store and I really like the long summer dresses.

I wouldn't go with a mini mini, but a nice flowy skirt above the knee is nice for this time of year.

Thanks! So basically a nice dress that a grandmother would approve of :)

tiger, I think that is a good way to think of it. Unless I knew that it was going to be a formal reception, I would go with an "Easter Sunday" kind of dress if that makes sense.

II don't know about gma's dress but that way cool aunt...I would follow her lead.savvy and stylish. Chic without pretention.
Minimum two steps above sundress level unless you pair a brand spanking new one with a tailored jacket for in the church and remove at reception.

But it has to be a very crisp dress.

I would say go naked but you don't want to upstage the bride on her special day...lol

Where do you live? Because where I live a 6 o'clock wedding means ****tail dress at a minimum. A flowery flowy dress is definitely something I would only do if it was a park thing, not n evenin gindoor wedding. But then again maybe my area is more formal, because I have never been to a buffet wedding either. They are all sit-down dinners.

Option 1

Option 2

The first dress fits better.

Live in Georgia - pretty much every wedding I've attended has been between 11-2 and has cake & punch after (no meal). So nice-ish dress/pants/shirt is good enough. Found out groom doesn't know if it's buffet or sit-down.

That would work at a Betazoid wedding...

Both those dresses are pretty, but the first one would be my choice because you would be able to wear it again for other occasions.

I should mention that, of the two examples, I liked the LBD (#2) better.

I liked both but the first one is probably more suited to a wedding. The LBD would look great at a night club.

I would go with the second one for an evening wedding, the first one is far too casual-well for every single wedding I have been to,.
