S/O of health info thread, Privacy online?

That thread got me thinking about privacy online in general. Do you online bank? Pay your bills online? Banking on the phone? Give random peeps your real life info?

I do the online banking and bill pay, seems pretty secure to me. My bank is especially secure with several things you have to do just to sign in. I don't bank with my phone though, I think the technology is too new and I am afraid my info could be compromised.

I have given a LOT of peeps my real name and address for the various card exchanges. I was so hesitant at first and it was a truly out of character thing for me to do. The thought of getting cards in the mail outweighed my fears though. I then thought that no one would want to stalk me anyway, I am way too boring lol.

So what do you think about internet privacy?

I don't think there is such a thing. But what can you do? As for my credit card information, it's the job of the credit card companies to protect the cardholder from fraudulent use. And I have had a couple instances where my cards were used by thieves. Both times the credit card company took care of everything.

Family Gal, me too. I have to say Chase was great - they called right after someone used my # fraudulently and being the untrusting person that I am, I did not believe them and thought it was a scam to get my card #. They told me to call them back on the # on the back of the card, I did, and it was legit. They went thru each charge for me and took off the ones that I didn't make. Excellent customer service!

And yes, I access my bank accounts on-line, daily. The information is there, whether you access it or not. It came in real handy 9 years ago when I was in Japan. I withdrew Yen in an amount I believed to be around $20 USD which turned out to be $200 USD. It was nice to be able to transfer money from accounts to avoid being overdrawn.

You know, I never considered that.  This is exactly why I started this thread. I need some perspective!

I bank and shop online, but only from my PC. If I had a data plan on my phone, I would not use it for those purposes.

I wouldn't have a problem giving peeps my real name or address, because it seems like joining a chat forum and waiting for the opportunity to get someone's IRL information would be a pretty slow and tedious process for most stalkers or internet baddies.

If you google yourself, sometimes you will be surprized at what you find.

I google myself all the time (that sounds dirty) just to see what's out there about me.

I google myself too. I actually deleted my google + account because of it. It was the only thing that came up. Surprisingly, my facebook account is way more private than google+. I only had a few friends on it anyway and no one really used it.

I am looking for a job and don't want any potential employers to see anything about me online. I would hate for them to see some comment I made to someone as a joke or something and have it taken the wrong way and cost me the job.

That is why it's important to watch what you say in your own name. Joke or otherwise, it could come back to haunt you. Much like posing nude or taping sexual escapades.

I have no one to protect, and no career to protect. While I don't cavalierly spread around my last names, I've shared them with oodles of Peeps at one time or another. Same with my physical address. Hell most Peeps know most of my life story lol.

Absolutely nothing comes up when Googling even my full name.

It wouldn't be that time consuming to find out info about someone if they check in on a daily thread that never gets erased. They may have given the information out slowly over months and years but you could come in 3yrs later and find out just about anything you wanted to know about them by reading one thread.

If someone wants to steal my "life" from on-line info... they are welcome to it.

It didn't take internet security breaches to ruin my credit... all it took was one piece of paper filed with the State of Florida... a marriage license.

I pay my bills and do my banking on line or with my phone. On a computer it doesn't bother me because because I can log off but my computer has been broken for a few weeks and I've been exclusively using my nook. It worries me that this thing saves my user name and password for everything even when I don't ask it to. That has to be some sort of design flaw. Plus I want to be able to LOCK it somehow so that only I can use it but no such luck on that either. This thing makes me feel very vulnerable.

And it's not like it wouldn't be easy to steal. It fits in your pocket.
