I went to a wedding last night and the cake table had the lovliest tiered white spongecake with whipped cream or some kind of fluffy icing between the layers only. It was garnished all around with plump strawberries. It was so simple, elegent and delicious looking. But it did seem a little small for the number of people there. The Bride and groom cut off a piece from the bottom layer and fed each other, then the bride announced there was cake on plates in the next room.
It was sheet cake with crisco icing. I have no idea what they planned to do with the good cake. It just sat there mocking the guests who had to walk by it to get the other cake.
I've seen this done at a lot of weddings - elaborate, gorgeous "couples" cake on display, sheet cake in the back for the guests. My brother and his STBXW had a decadent cheesecake for themselves while the rest of us got grocery store cake.

None of the bakeries in this town, except one can make a decent cake. Most of the caterers make pretty mediocre cake too. The owner of one bakery downtown has the cake baking area up front by the window so you can see her giant boxes of Duncan Heinz cake mix on the counter top.
Aardvark, that would be so sad to have grocery store cake and know that cheesecake was right there.
My niece used to work at Nob Hill. Not sure if they are a national chain but they are a high end store. Their cakes.... yummmy! Niece lives here in hickville now but she got the head cake making job and she uses her training from the good bakery and our rinky dink little store churns out some quality cakes. I never heard of crisco icing. But I don't like icing anyway. I think it's pretty but I don't want to eat it.
