I just saw the movie 56 Up. For those of you that don't know, this is the 8th part of a series that started in 1963/64 when 14 British 7 year olds of different socio-economic, educational, and family backgrounds were interviewed about their lives. At the time it was meant as a one-off but the filmmakers have returned every seven years (roughly) to interview those that would agree to participate.  As the title suggests, the participants are now (at the time of filming) 56. 13 of the original 14 participated in this entry.

Have any of you watched this series? I only started watching a few years but am very drawn in and really love it. While the first film was meant as a study of class (something that has continued to some degree) it's become more of a simple human interest story, seeing how people take shape over the years and being drawn into their lives.

Have you seen any good movies lately? Anything out you want to see? Anything upcoming of interest?

Other current releases I've seen are Flight, Holy Motors, and Tabu.

I'd like to see Amour and maybe Lincoln.

I saw Flight, Lincoln, and this weekend I saw Django Unchained. I actually thought the latter was good even though I don't much care for QT.

I can't wait to see the gangster movie with Sean Penn. I also can't wait to see the movie with Catherin Zeta-Jones and Russell Crowe.

I am not likely to see any off-beat movies like you mentioned Cactus because in NJ there are a few movie theaters that serve dinner and drinks while viewing and these are the only ones I will go and view a movie and they do not show off-beat movies.

BTW, I have to say that this year the movies that are Oscar-worthy are very limited IMO.

I've read and seen bits of the 7 UP series, I think mostly through PBS. I do find it interesting.

I'm looking forward to the next Die Hard and Star Trek movies. Not much else looks interesting.

What did you think of the other two?

I don't like Quentin Tarantino either. Though, I think I have only seen two of his movies-Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol 1.

I don't think this year's Oscar prospects look very good either but maybe not as bad as last year. The Oscars are not a great reflection of what's good in moviemaking anyway, but they are entertaining.

I have actually never seen a Die Hard movie. What is this, the fourth? I think maybe the first one is pretty good?

I didn't really like the previous Star Trek. But I wouldn't rule this one out based on that.

The fifth Die Hard if memory serves.

42, we don't have dine-in theaters here (that I know of). This makes me unreasonably sad.

I don't really like eating while watching movies, unless it's something I've already seen or don't care about.
Of course I have no objection to the existence of places where others may do so.

I saw The Hobbit a couple weeks ago. I thought it was pretty good. I wanted to see (but missed in theatres) Red Dawn, Seven Psychopaths, and... oh man! There were 4 or 5 and I can't even remember what they are now LOL. I still want to see Lincoln and Les Mis but with DH gone again I will have to wait until they come out on BR.

As for movies coming out soon I want to see Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters, The new Die Hard movie (I have to catch the old ones first though), OZ The Great and Powerful, Jack the Giant Slayer, the new G.I. Joe, Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger, Red 2 (really excited about this one, laughed my ass off during the first one), Hunger Games and Thor part 2 for both, The Seventh Son and Winters Tale both look interesting, The next Hobbit movie for sure, I know there will be more in addition to the one I listed.

Sorry my list got a little longbiggrin. I love going out and watching movies. I love watching them at home as well. I just never seem to make the time to do it. My "must watch" list is huge.

For the Die Hard movies, 1 and 3 were good. Loved both Alan Rickman and Jeremy Irons as the bad guys. The 2nd one wasn't so great. The 4th one was awful. I do hope the 5th one is good. I like that the John McCane character is helping is grown son.

I LOVED the last Star Trek movie. So funny in all the right places. I love alternate realities.

We just saw Parental Guidance. Predicitable but fun. I love Billy Crystal.
We saw the previews for that 56 Up movie - that was the first I had ever heard of it. It looks interesting.
There aren't really any movies I'm looking forward to yet. Some I'll probably see because either DH or DS or both will want to see them are the new Die Hard (I do like the series), the new GI Joe and the one with Mark Wahlberg (can't remember the name).

Was the 4th Die Hard with the Mac guy? Justin Long? If so, I loved it. I think I liked all the Die Hard movies.

We saw the Hobbit a couple weeks ago. I thought it was great. Didn't like the Lincoln Vampire Hunter movie. I thought the new Tinkerbell movie was good, although I"m probably alone on that one :) I'm sure there's several that came out this year that I wanted to see, but never got around to it and can't remember them.

Wanting to see the new Die Hard, Star-Trek, Beautiful Creatures, Thor, Hunger Games, Safe Haven, Oz, The Great Gatsby, Mortal Instruments, Ender's Game, Hobbit 2. And I love horror movies (the non-gory ones), so Mama probably.

In more fluff, here are this year's Razzie nominees, accompanying an article criticizing them:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/criticwire/2013-razzie-nominations-problem-with-razzies

I don't really follow or care about them but what I can see I agree with the article. They seem like a good mirror image of the Oscars in that they are just as dull and obvious.

I admit, I liked Total Recall and thought Jessica Beil was great in it. Then again I never saw the first one. I am not a Arnold fan, he seems the same to me in every role he plays. I know a lot of people don't like remakes though. It also reminded me of one of the movies I wanted to see but forgot, Playing for Keeps. Which Jessica Beil also got another nod for worst supporting actress inevileye.

I haven't seen any of the movies nominated for Razzies this year. I think some of them are movies people love to hate, like the Twilight movies. They are all pretty high profile movies, probably not really the worst, but maybe the popular idea of the worst. Kind of obvious and boring as picks.

Netflix took Farscape from me!!! I was only a few episodes from the end too! I am so sadcry. Now I don't know how it ends!

I usually don't let things like reviews and Razzies keep me from seeing a movie I think looks good. I like all kinds of movies (except horror) and have liked many movies others don't. I loved to be pulled into a good story. I agree with you the Razzies seem to have a love to hate vibe going on.

I saw Amour yesterday. I admired the acting and as I watched it, there were parts I found quite affecting. However I am not sure what my overall lasting impression is. I think I prefer a few of Michael Haneke (the director)'s earlier movies.

Have you read the books? What did you think of the casting of Tom Cruise? It seems like many people who like the books were very displeased with that aspect of it. (I haven't read the books or seen the movie)

I got around to watching a movie! I am so proud of me lol. DH bought me a pair of wireless headphones so I could walk on the treadmill and still hear the movie. It's a win/win. I get in some me time watching a movie I've wanted to see, and I get a workout. I watched "Horrible Bosses". I liked it. It wasn't as funny as I thought it would be but still pretty good. I think I'm going to watch another one on Friday but don't know what yet.

I haven't read the books so had no expectations. I did read that he was the complete physical opposite of the character in the book, but I thought Tom Cruise did great in the role!

I haven't seen any new releases lately but I did rent the documentary The Imposter on DVD. It is about a strange case of a missing person and an impersonation (I don't think I am giving much away by saying that) If you don't know more about this case I would probably suggest watching the documentary without finding out more.

You can read about the same case in the article The Chameleon, by David Grann

Bumping my own thread...

I haven't seen any new or semi new releases other than Paradise: Love (drama about female sex tourists in Kenya) a few weeks ago. Before that I saw The Gatekeepers (documentary featuring interviews with former heads of Shin Bet) and Room 237 (documentary about people's theories about the movie The Shining)

There aren't many new releases that look very good to me, though there a few I will probably end up seeing due to other people, like the new Star Trek (though I didn't really like the prior Star Trek) and Iron Man 3 (though I didn't really like the first two or think that highly of The Avengers).

I have seen some not-so-new movies that I have enjoyed or at least found interesting, like Journey to Italy (1954 Roberto Rossellini movie about disintegrating marriage, starring Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders); Workingman's Death (documentary about terrible jobs); The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly ; and Birdemic: Shock and Terror (a movie so terrible many suspect its terribleness of having been deliberate/faked but which I would love to believe was authentic).

If you've seen any of these, what are you thoughts, and if you haven't, have you seen anything especially good (or bad) lately?
