car epitaphs - have you seen these?

Last night, on the back of somebody's car, I saw what seemed like an epitaph on a tombstone. It had a name (which I don't remember), the years (1957 - 2012) and "beloved father". My cousin says this is a tradition in the Hispanic community. Anybody else see these?

I've seen many of them. Personally, I don't get it most of the time... Not because I don't understand the wish to commemorate the life of a loved one but because in many of the cases I've seen the car is an absolute WRECK.

I just don't think "In Remembrance of {Whomever}" with "{Date} - {Date}" below it... on a beat to hell and dirty as crap 1977 Ford Pinto is a worthy memorial. I mean if it's all you can afford, at least keep it clean and in decent repair...

I've seen them here, in many cars, not just Hispanic-owned ones. The first time I saw any publicity on them was when some high school students were killed in a car wreck. The parents saw it as a way to keep their children from being forgotten.

It's not anything I would do, but I guess some people find comfort in it.

There is one car at work that has one for their pet.

I think a better Memorial would be for them to find someone like EmmDee that could make them a nice memorial stone for placement in a rock garden or mini pond.

I see them a lot and we're not in a diverse area at all.

Renegade, I hope my post didn't imply that I disapproved of these in some way. I had simply never seen one before and thought it was strange.

In our area it is common to see cars and trucks with dedications and epitaphs in the back windows. Some have photos or line drawings of the person's face. I've only seen them for people, never for pets yet.

They are common here. I have one for the UBB mine disaster. Proceeds went to the families.

I have a female coworker who has one on her truck, I believe it's for her baby daughter that died in infancy.

I saw them a lot when I lived in SoCal, especially when I was in high school and college.

That's actually how I found out a friend I had lost touch with died. That was a bit painful.

They are fairly common around here and it is usually with the Mexican community.

I see them all the time.

I work in a community that is mostly Hispanic, of Mexican descent.

Thanks.  I still haven't been able to find an obit or anything else, but she had a very unusual name, especially in our community, so...

Ironically, I've only seen *maybe* a handful in the last 6 years I've been living in Mexico.

It's funny how Mexican communities in the states do somethings that we don't do at all here... I have yet to see one of those.

I've never seen that. Is it written in the dirt on the window? or on a card or paper that is then stuck to the window?

Usually they are something like this:

Made out of vinyl and stuck on the window.

I live in Texas now and see them fairly often.

Around here, it is usually the Hispanic community, but not always.

Oh! That makes more sense. All I could picture was:

th?id=H.4817429650672022&pid=1.7&w=225&h=169&c=7&rs=1

And I thought that was a strange way to honor someone...no

Around here they are actually etched into the glass. There are several among my sons' friends who have memorials on their windows for friends who have died in service.

That's kind of cool...I wonder what they do or how they feel when they get rid of the car though...

I knew a lady that lost her son in a motorcycle accident 8 years ago, she put one on her car in memory of him. I've seen them around 3 states I've lived in for the last 10-15 years.

That's the one thing that makes me think they are kind of silly and a waste of money. Unless the person is planning on keeping the car forever... of course.
