So, Yankee has a new line of Man Candles. Scents - First Down, Riding Mower, Mmmm Bacon!, Movie Night (popcorn) and Man Town. Manly candle accessories (if there is such a thing) include a candle holder that looks like a beer mug and has a cap that looks like beer foam.

There's a Yankee Candle store in the mall close to me. I went in and I was the only person there, so I spent some time chatting with the owner, who was a man. (We both agreed that the Schnitzle with Noodles was NASTY, btw.) He said that 90% of his clientel is women. And that the men who do come in are looking for a present for their wives, girlfriends, etc.

My sister sells Gold Canyon candles. They had a "manly" line that was unbelievable gross. It included Nachos, Pizza, Motor Oil, etc. (The Nacho and Pizza scents smelled like those foods...plus stomach acid. The candle smelled like barf with top notes of tomato and jalapeno, basically.)

I would only think of those novelty scents as a gag gift, nothing that I expected to get used.

I think it's lame. Most gender directed marketing is.

What fresh cut grass wasn't manly enough?

Seriously I worked in a candle store, most men, if they're buying a candle it's for a woman in their life, if it's for them they usually want vanilla or sandalwood, sometimes they want the Yankee Candle scent that's something like "Fresh Linen." It's been over 15 years since I worked there and there's not an outlet near me to refresh my memory so I'm guessing on the exact title of the scent.

This reminds me of a joke --How many men does it take to change a light bulb? None. Men aren't afraid of the dark.

Some truth to that. Men aren't buying candles for themselves, and no "theme" is going to change it. Except as a gag like md said.

I drove by the flagship store today and saw a sign for the bacon one. Yeah, I love bacon but don't think I want a bacon smelling candle!

"Gag" being the operative word, in some cases!

I'm going to buzz by there this week to smell them, I think! I encourage other Peeps to do the same and we can all report back!

I agree.  If my house smells like bacon, there better be some on a plate waiting for me!

Exactly. If there's bacon smell there'd better be edible bacon somewhere... otherwise it's just a tease... and men don't like teases.

I just asked my husband if he'd want any of those scents, and he looked at me like my backside grew a head and that head was talking to him.

This must have been the result of a marketing meeting at YC and someone came up with this brilliant idea to attract more men into the stores to buy candles for themselves. I don't believe most men would admit to buying candles for themselves, not that there's anything wrong w/it, especially if he is planning a romantic evening w/his girl, but then, he'd want a more feminine scent. Perhaps they are marketing to the macho gay male community?confuse

Oh, and the poll doesn't include a choice that says, "I like donuts"

Ex fiance did ask for a non-girly scented candle as we smoked in the bedroom. There are plenty of options in YC's regular line.

DF has kind of tinkered with candle making. A scent I really want to get is fresh baked bread.

I know lots of men who buy candles for themselves (although granted a large portion are using them as part of a romantic gesture but some do use them in generic decorations). I don't know any men who buy scented candles for themselves or anyone else. The only women I know who use scented candles are using them to (try to) cover up some other odor. Personally I'm allergic, I can't even go into a Yankee Candle shop.

So i went to the Yankee Candle store (and bought waay too much stuff) and smelled the Man Candles.

Mmm, Bacon! - Vomit inducing. Like sticking your nose in a jar of Bacos bacon bits.
Movie Night - Buttery popcorn. Not my thing, but if you like popcorn scented candles you'll love it.
First Down - vaguely like leather. Not bad, but not really that special either.
Riding Mower - Like the "Cut Grass" fragrance, but much stronger/grassier. I'm not a fan, but I don't like any of those scents. If you really like the smell of cut grass, you'll probably like it.
Man Town - A bit like Gillette, but a bit softer and more complex. I really like this one. I'll try to catch it on sale.

Thanks for the recap Ophelia!

I'm curious about the riding mower one, I loooove the cut grass smell. When I go to the states I'll try to check it. Do they have a Yankee Candle store at King of Prussia mall?

They're pretty pricey, about $28 for the large jars. I usually wait for a clearance sale (they're having one now, btw). Right now a lot of scents are 50% off. I think it's worth it, b/c the candles actually smell good when they burn, and they usually "throw" the scent pretty well, meaning scent will travel. Some cheaper candles smell gross when they are lit, and some don't throw smell at all. I usually have to pay full price for my very very favorite scent, Citrus & Sage, b/c it is super popular and rarely goes on sale. I recently got "Beachwood" scent and that smell doesn't seem to travel very far at all.
