Our apartments are doing a huge remodel, inside and out.  On the outside they are replacing all metal railing on stairs and balconies.  Well....I guess they don't feel the need to inform people of actual work dates.  Today they are working on our building.  They are currently on our balcony replacing our railing.

Am I crazy to expect notification of workers being on our balcony just as they would notify if someone was entering our apartment?   First of all, I would have scheduled to not be home.  Second of all, I would have moved anything I didn't want the workers to have to move yesterday.

I absolutely would expect to be notified in advance. Heck, my complex notified us in advance about crews power cleaning the common areas between apartments.

I lived in an apartment building (top floor of three "occupiable" floors above parking spaces) when it was being COMPLETELY refurbished (including tearing off the outside walls and insulation and redoing/rebuilding it from the outside... without disturbing the sheetrock in the actual units). While they were doing that they also completely tore off the wooden walkways... one unit's worth at a time.

Good thing I was a night worker / day sleeper then.... NOT!

Took our dog out for a walk this morning. Yesterday they started on the front stairwell but did not finish. Come back from the walk, they are working on the front stairs so I go around to the back. They have it blocked off from the back to the front units. Guy was grinding and I am sure wearing ear plugs and could not hear me so I finally went under the chained off area to get access to our apartment.

Yes, they should definitely notify you.

I was visiting relatives the other weekend. While I was there, their water was turned off. They said they are not notified in advance when this happens.

I agree on being notified in advance!
They should give you time to plan in advance in case you don't want to be around or have a pet that gets nervous with construction noises.

They did finally give us notice about turning off the water to work on something last week. It was scheduled to be off from 9-3. The previous two times, once was a water pipe accident and one was scheduled but lacked notification.
