I am watching Four Weddings and I want to cry! One of the brides made flowers out of book pages and the other brides are GUSHING over them. If I were there, I'd scream, "Murderer!" and throw myself on them.

I've seen that show and usually like it, but didn't catch that episode. It is a shame to tear up books and flowers made of book pages doesn't sound very decorative.
Um... i was the Dictionary Fairy for Hallowe'en last year and totally destroyed a circa 1985 dictionary for the wings, wand, flower accessories, etc. I felt bad but I bought it at a thrift store and now have hundreds of pages to use for other crafts without destroying another book.
I also have a paperback version of "Middlemmarch" that fell apart on its own that I use for crafting as well.
After seeing so many books not get sold at the Friends of the Library book sale and then carted off to the recycler, I don't have a problem with books being used for crafts. Some books just outlive their 'readingness'.
Huge book lover, but I agree with winds and other others. I make soap, and I've decided to start wrapping my soaps in pages from books I get from the free bin at 2nd and charles, etc.
I've got another book of fairy tales I rescued from a pile of junk in front of a foreclosed house. It's falling apart. I'm going to frame some of the illustrations and use the un-illustrated pages for wrapping soap.
It used to really bug me too, but we cant' keep all books.
