I am so embarrassed by this topic, because I did not make good on my 2013 resolution to have a will by year's end. Guess it will be my 2014 resolution, as well. I have a neighborhood acquaintance who is a lawyer and we've already discussed in passing her drawing up a will for me (which would be a simple one as I have no heirs and don't intend to leave more money than it will take to cremate me; I just have a few items of jewelry and clothing I want to go to specific people).

I really better get started!
What state are you in, iluvsuomi? Right now all our money goes to Merry, but when she gets older I want to be able to start a scholarship fund at my undergrad, my grad school and both the community college by husband went to as well as the one I went to. We got so much from our schools, I want to pay it back.

I'm in CT. You're wise to plan ahead, especially when a child is involved.
I don't have one, but only because I don't have any assets that don't "go to" The Wife... which, as my spouse, she gets by default anyway. Should I ever get a family inheritance or something deserving of "Willing"... then I shall cross that bridge.

We do. Pretty simple...surviving spouse and if they're gone, then the kids divide it equally, provided we have anything left. Longevity runs on both sides.
Not yet, we want to have one now that we have a LO. We haven't done it yet. I think we are waiting until we have the next one so we can include both of them.

Good thing you don't live in Oregon. If you die without a will in Oregon, only half your estate will go to your spouse . The other half will go to your children.

I don't have any "your children" All the kids in my family were a "pre-existing condition" of hers.

If you have small children, a will is a must. I don't have a will, but all my accounts are POD to my husband, then my siblings and stepson if he dies at the same time. I guess we should do one because I still have a house in my name only and DH and I own the place where we live together.

If you die intestate, your state will divide your stuff and it may not be the way you really want it done.
(not a lawyer but I couldn't resist the opportunity to use the word 'intestate'...hoping I can use it sometime on the word game!)
