I got spoiled last year. NY state wanted everyone to file online so turbo tax state was free because I made under $58,000. This year there are only two free options but you have to do both state and fed with them and I already filled with turbo tax, partly because they gave me an extra 10% to any amazon gift card I bought with my refund. Therefore I have to fill out my state by hand unless I want to pay $30. But, my time is not worth $30/hour so I have to do it. Bah!
Around here our IRS has an online way to do your taxes if you have some deductions, so DH and I do them ourselves. I have a SIL that's an accountant and she did it for us a couple of years before we noticed how easy is to do them.

The NY state one is easy, I just wanted to do it for a couple clicks for free, lol. I take about 1/2hr-1hr to do it and check it. Basically, I am just being lazy.

I have to get our tax stuff together. Most of it is in a pile on the bookcase next to me, but it needs organized, copied, tallied, etc. The stuff that isn't in the pile just needs printed off the computer. I'm down in the lair now trying to get paperwork in order, but AB's with me, so it's slow going.

I do my own taxes, but I hate it. I'll probably have to pay this year because I won't be able to claim my mom, so that makes me really hate it. I usually have to wait until March to file, I don't get everything I need from investments until the end of February, then of course I have to procastinate for a couple of weeks.
Yesterday, I opened the envelopes w/my W-2 forms (I worked at three different places in the last year, although at the same place for the last 9 months; hopefully, next year, I will just have the one W-2 to deal with at tax time).
Then, I sorted them.
Today, I will add up all the various amounts, ie Total Fed, Total NY State, Total CT State.
I find that doing a little bit each day makes it easier and not such a daunting task. I have to pay Fed., plus to two states because I worked out of state for part of this year. I'm glad I'm finally working and living in the same state now. Makes taxes so much easier!

Some of you are way ahead of me. I have the envelopes in the desk drawer, unopened and Turbo Tax is still in the box, still sealed. I will try to get started next weekend.
Usually we get a small federal refund which is about the same amount as the check I write to the state so I'm in no big hurry.
TurboTax is what I use. I get one state downloaded for free. Granted, I pay for the program itself. Which I get back in what I charge for doing a few other people's tax returns. They are warned that I will NOT sign as preparer and if anything goes wrong, it is on them (Only ever had one error in 10 years).
I am pleasantly surprised about our refund because of the my tuition/education rebate. I still have some tweaking to do while waiting on a few forms.
