Let's do this two ways, how much would YOU pay for this dress for your hypothetical daughter's prom? AND, how much do you think this dress cost new?
I saw this on facebook where a mom is trying to sell it. I have the new price and what she wants to sell it for used. It is in a public facebook group so I do not have concerns posting the photo.
Oh, honey, that is less than what they want for it used. That is probably what I would be willing to spend though, at the top. Either that or find a cheaper dress or a job to pay for it yourself.
My budget for a prom dress would be $150, I think. I would be more than willing to drive my daughter to consignment shops, etc, to look for a great dress. And if she wants to chip in more, that would be fine.
I got an amazing red satin full length gown at Goodwill for $20. I didn't need it but I snapped it up and wore it for Halloween. (with some vamp make up and fake tattoos)
If I have a daughter, I plan to start prom dress shopping months in advance.
$800 new? I wouldn't have payed that, $500 used no way Jose!
I just got a new dress for a wedding and it was around $300 and I went over what I wanted to spend because I loved the dress
For me, I think it is just too much going on to spend that kind of money. If it was something timeless and elegant, MAYBE I could see it because it could have some more use in it for either daughter or someone else. Between the ruffles, the rhinestones, the zebra print, it is very much something that only appeals to certain people. Take out some of that or tone it down, it would be more acceptable. I still wouldn't spend $800, don't even know about $500.
Personally I am not a fan of it. I like parts of it but like the zebra animal print thing on the bottom bothers me. It has a lot of beadwork so I am guessing it is pricier. For used things in mint condition I am only willing to pay half of what it would retail off the rack. People think their used items are worth more than they are, but the very fact that it is used automatically makes it worth a lot less. You can't buy a dress for $1000 and then wear it once and then try to sell it for $800 or $900. At most you can get $750
I think I will start to brainwash my daughters now that we'll just sew their prom dresses and keep the price under $50. I can't fathom spending that much on a prom dress! Put that cash toward a car or college!
My wedding dress was only around $500 so yeah its nuts that girls spend that much on prom dresses. My parents could have spent a lot on me or at least my Dad could have, but its kinda wasteful.

This reminded me of my own wedding dress, mine was $800 maybe a little less given the exchange rate, but have you seen say yes to the dress?
A budget of thousands of dollars for a wedding dress??
I realize the young ladies are supposed to spend bucks to look good for Prom... but is it really necessary to spend several HUNDREDS of dollars on a dress that will (most likely) be worn once, and, if the night goes right, end up in ball on the floor of a hotel room?

Hahahaha
Is it for real? Is not just a cliche from Hollywood movies?

Well... I can't speak for everyone around the world... but... it was a given every year that I was in school that that was the plan for all the seniors after prom... hotel rooms.
(my senior year the whole thing got screwed up... we didn't actually have a "Prom", because the Junior Class screwed it up {each year, Prom for the Seniors was paid for by the Junior Class}... so we threw a party in the woods (on a massive wooded area owned by the parents of one of the Seniors)... no hotels and no expensive dresses or tuxes. Personally, I didn't have a date, so I didn't get the "after party experience"... but all the dating couples did.)

It is hard to tell without touching the fabric and seeing the construction of the dress, but it does not look like an $800 dress to me. I agree that it has way too much going on and would not pay more than about $100. Maybe $150 if my hypothetical teenaged daughter just had to have it and had inherited her fashion sense from her dad.

I agree - it looks like cheap polyester fabric. besides being incredibly ugly.
Richard, was it really necessary to sleeze up the discussion?
I hate to tell you this, but I didn't "sleeze up" anything. There's nothing sleezy (sp?) about the likely after effects of Prom to the dress. Why do you think gals want to look their best for prom? They want to look good for their date (the same reason the guys rent Tuxes, to look good for their date too).
As for my post explaining my personal experience... I was asked a question, and that was the legitimate and complete answer.

Right for whom? I hope this is not the thinking of my daughters.

See my answer to Desdenova a few messsages up.
And to expand on that answer a little bit, the gals were also planning that way. It wasn't just "a guy thing" when I said "plan for all the seniors". I meant the female seniors too.

And how would you kow what ALL the seniors planned? Unless you went to a school with one senior, there's no way you knew what ALL planned.
And wanting to look nice for a date does not mean they plan on having sex. Not everyone think sex is the only thing that matters.
Fair enough, there may have been a few guys AND a few gals that didn't have that plan. But they were a very definite minority. It's something that was openly discussed at lunch or in the halls, or anywhere that classmates would be in groups... for several MONTHS before Prom actually happened.
And these discussions went on every year.
Also, please re-read the following from my reply to you:
Why do you think gals want to look their best for prom? They want to look good for their date (the same reason the guys rent Tuxes, to look good for their date too).
Now, please point out where, in there, I said anything resembling "everyone thinks sex is the only thing that matters"

I can't believe paretns would let their kids spend the night out, I sure wouldn't
i'm surprised that this mother paid $800 for that dress. i wouldn't have paid more than $200 for it. and i sure wouldn't buy it on Craig's List for more than $50.
