What do you mean when you say 'what'?

DH is soft spoken and mumbles. He also likes to talk to me with several barriers (walls, doors) in between. So, my usual response is 'what?' as in, what did you say? His response is usually to explain or expound on what he has said. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, I still have no clue as to what he's talking about. I guess he interprets my 'what' as 'what did you mean?'

If I can get my brain to function that quickly, I'm going to try to say something like 'please repeat what you just said'.

But, what do YOU mean when you say 'what'?

If I can't hear someone or think I misheard someone, I'd say, "Excuse me," (or if I want to appear really affected, I'd say, "Sorry?" like the British do.)  That usually indicates to someone that I didn't quite hear what you originally said.  However, I suppose when a couple has lived together over a number of years, you develop a kind of shorthand.smile

Typically it means I did not hear you. But sometimes it is like an expletive like "WHAT?! She did that?!" Kind of thing.

I am married to a mumbler too. Its not fun. I have to yell at him to speak up and enunciate constantly. Embarrasses me at restaurants where the poor server has to ask him 3 times what he is saying when he orders.

One would think, wouldn't one? We're pushing 37 years and so far, our "shorthand" is still...imperfect.

That's because you two keep your marriage perennially in the "Honeymoon" stage.smile

 This is MY DH.

I usually just bellow, "I can't HEAR you."

Today seems to be my day...

1- I start grating cheese on my KitchenAid (if you aren't aware, this involves noise like, 18 inches or less from the ear). DH is working in the other room. Sure enough, through the mixer noise I hear **wha, wha, wha** which means DH is talking to me WHILE I HAVE MUCH LOUDER NOISE THAT IS CLOSER TO ME. sigh. I finish grating and say as nicely as I can in my irritated state, "I don't know if you noticed, but I was making noise while you were talking, so what did you say?" Of course, I had no way of knowing he had left that room and gone down to the basement. He heard me, though, and repeated what he had said. By some miracle, I actually was able to understand.

2- (we're in the same room this time) DH: mumble, mumble. Me: Excuse me? DH gives me a clear repetition! Hurray!

'Excuse me' has made the list of phrases I must chisel in stone! (WHY did I never use this before? WHY????)

I actually rarely every say "What?", just the single word, by itself.

Matter of fact, barring the occasional "WHAT?!?!?!?!?", said in jest, here, on various internet boards like this one... I cannot recall the last time I did so.

 HAHAHAHA

I can't add anything else since in our house we speak Spanish and usually don't use the Spanish word for what either. However whenever we don't hear each other we say "I'm sorry I didn't hear anything that you said"

 I just saw this hahaha

Yeah we don't really say it, it can be taken out of context and be a rude way to answer your partner :P

Actually, when gang members, or people in the street are looking for a fight they go

¿qué, qué, qué?

with a special intonation. It's funny.

I usually say "what was that" if I didn't hear it. If he tells me "what?", I will say "which part?" so I know if he needs the full repeat or something explained.

When I say "What?" I mean "What did you say?"

Since my sister mumbles, talks fast, & often is either turned away from me, in another room, or ignoring that the water is running/microwave is on/furnace just kicked in, I frequently have occasion to utter such remarks as:

"Pardon?"

"I can't hear you!"

"The [noise-maker] was running.  What did you say?"

She says I am hard of hearing.  ...  And the beauty of it is that she herself cannot hear me, despite my flawless diction, in the same circumstances.

It's amazing how often that happens... "It must be you"... until they have the same problem then it's {whatever really was causing the problem... that you probably told them about}.

I come across that all the time with The Wife. I'll have the stove fan on or something and she'll try to tell me something and it's MY problem (like my hearing is going bad and needs to be checked) that I can't hear her... yet when she has the exact same fan going and she can't hear me, it's the fan's fault.
