About two months ago, a woman called the house looking for Preacher Man.  She was calling every number she could find for anyone with the same name, as she was once engaged to Same Name back in the fifties.  They lost touch and she wanted to find him after all these years.  I explained that Same Name wasn't PM, nor was he a close relative.  Being the sucker that I am, I offered to do some Googling and see what I could dig up.  She didn't have a lot of information to go on, so it's been difficult to find him.  I finally did the ancestry.com free trial today and I found him.  Unfortunately, he is deceased, so that part of the story has a sad ending.

Since I now have 14 days to poke around the site, I've been researching my own tree and it's been pretty interesting.  I'm back into the late 1700's right now and I'm fairly obsessed.  So far, my favorite name is George Washington MaidenName.  There are a ton of Johns, Jameses, and Elizabeths.

I found a couple with PM's parents' names clear across the country, which was neat.

No famous people yet, though!

That sounds like a lot of fun!
I would like to know more about my ancestry, the only thing I know for sure is that my grandfather's dad (on the maternal side) came from Spain, also my first last name is kind of Arabic and my dad has Arabic features.

And that's it!

I once did a Genealogy project for school... I turned up some interesting things in my background. My favorite "Family Fact" is that I'm related to Napoleon Bonaparte (no, I'm not a descendant... he didn't have any kids. We both share an ancestor further back on our respective "lines").

Someone on MM1 recommended FamilySearch.org and wow I actually found stuff lol. I never knew the names of my paternal grandparents but I found them, and my grandmothers parents. Her mother was an indentured servant who was sent from England to the US at age four, that blows my mind. A little four year old sailing across the ocean to a new life with strangers. She ended up marrying a boy who'd arrived at age 6 from Germany, also by himself. So that trail stops there but it is way more information than I ever knew.

Which is a long winded say of saying try FamilySearch.org lol. It is the Morman site, they've extensive records.

I have pretty extensive information on both sides of my family. My sister loves to do that stuff, and tracked my mom's side to the days of Charlemagne. She was able to join the DAR with the info she found. I even have a coat of arms on my father's side, found on a tombstone in Belgium.

I let her do the work, I don't have the patience for it. You have to be very careful with your research; my cousin was not happy that my sister found that no, we're not descendents of Robert Frost.

My mom is having a lot of fun on ancestry.com. She's got a bunch of old pictures, so she's been scanning them in and naming them. She'll leave it alone for a few weeks, and then come back and somebody else would have added stuff to their trees and she's got new leaves.

 That's pretty neat.

I've been told we're direct descendants of Ralph Waldo Emerson, but I've found we're not.  It's possible that he's a cousin, though.

I have found a Bulkeley in the tree, back in the early 1700's. And I thought people picked strange names today!

I have reached the end of the records for my maiden name, all the way back to 1250. The wife's name is very similar to mine, except spelled differently.

PM has started researching his tree, too. He's related to the Hershey family - must be what attracted me to him...I could sense the chocolate in his veins!

Milton Hershey and his wife had no children but thousands of children were blessed because of him. (and not just from eating his candy!)

I'm not exactly sure HOW he's related...very distant cousins, I think.

Probably the same way I am related to Napoleon (who also had no kids)... someone further up each respective tree.
