Cousin and the muffin tin
Permalink

Cousin likes to bake muffins and freeze them to eat for breakfast. And she doesn't like to wash her muffin tins. She actually had the gall to complain that we'd ruined her muffin tins, so mom bought her brand new muffin tins that I am not allowed to use. 3 weeks ago, she made muffins...and the muffin tins were STILL in the sink! So mom just put the dirty muffin tin back in the cupboard.

After I "accidentally" dumped some blood from some meat I was thawing on it.

Putting it back in the cupboard unwashed, is only going to attract ants and other vermin to your mother's property. I would have taped the dirty tin to her bed or some other object that she owns. It would sound a powerful message, not that anyone clueless, entitled and P/A enough like your cousin would get it. Princess was hoping if she kept it in the sink long enough, either you or your mother would wash it.

btw, my response to her complaining that her tins were "ruined" after she left them in the sink unwashed would have been, "Well, then, don't leave dirty muffin tins in the sink and they won't get ruined."  No way would I have bought her new tins.

I'm sure your mother means well, but she is a bit of an enabler, as far as your cousin goes, is she not?

Mom is TOTALLY an enabler. There is no "bit" about it, LOL. My suggestion was to put it on her bed. Heck, my first suggestion was for her to say, "Cousin, please wash your muffin tin, thanks!" But hey, at this point anything is better than mom washing it herself!

Yeah, I was irritated mom bought her new muffin tins. There is a way to confront something without being harsh and confrontational. But mom can't/won't do that.

If cousin mentions the muffin tin being dirty, I'm going to say neutrally, "Cousin, it sat here for three weeks. You need to wash your muffin tin right after you make muffins."

That is a reasonable response, so of course, it will go right over her head.

She'll probably be ticked off that her pan is so gross. But honestly, I think that if Mom grew a pair and said, "Cousin, please wash your muffin pan," Cousin would probably do it. I honestly think she's so used to the "kitchen fairies" that she doesn't even think about it that that's her pan.

I wouldn't even say "please."  I'd say, "Cousin, in this house, we wash our muffin tins as soon as we are done using them.  House Rule."

If fact, I might begin every conversation with Cousin, "In this house, we..."

Supposedly, her apartment will be finished in May. And we all know that buildings are ALWAYS finished on time! (eye roll)

Currently she's at Disney World. Yup. Not paying rent for 4 months, but had plenty of money to go on a ski trip to Aspen and now to fly her and her child and spend a week at Disney, etc. Awesome.

Sometimes I am very petty and I say to mom, "Gee, I'm just SUPER GLAD that she's able to save all this money and not pay rent so her son can go to Disney World AGAIN." (This is his 3rd or 4th time.)

Tell her if she would use cupcake liners then the muffin tins would be a heck of a lot easier to clean after making muffins. That is what I do.

At this point, if I were your mother, I'd have her and her son's stuff packed and out on the lawn and the locks changed.  You, realize, of course, that your mom will never see this rent money.

ETA: Also, she'll be in no hurry to move into a new place, because she won't be able to get away there w/o paying rent.

Oh, I know she'll never see the rent money. She asked cousin to move out by March, and said, "YOu can save your Jan and Feb rent for your new apartment." So cousin convienently picked an apartment that wasn't available until May, so this way she doesn't have to move and possibly pay tuition to her son's current school.

If I find dirty tins... they either go in the trash or get washed and the offending person gets a few minutes of my wrath... depends on my mood.

Yeah, my first choice would have been asking Cousin to wash it, second would have been putting it on her bed, third just throwing it away. So while I'm not in love with sticking a nasty, bloody muffin tin in the cabinet, it's MILES from mom washing it herself AGAIN so I'll take what I can get!

My mom used to put my brother's pans on the back porch when he didn't clean up after himself. It was winter, so bugs and smell not a problem.

In our situation, that wouldn't work b/c it's not a house rule. Mom and I take turns cleaning the kitchen. So yes, sometimes things will sit in the sink for 2-3 days, and then one of us will load the dishwasher, empty it, re-load it (maybe run it again), and wash all of the pots and pans. When mom and I do it, it doesn't matter who cooked what b/c we take turns.

At first, Cousin was fairly good about participating in the "rotation". She still did less than mom and I, but on her days off she'd run the dishwasher, wash dishes, etc. It got to the point where she was emptying the dishwasher maybe twice a month. And pretty much NEVER washing the pots and pans she cooked in.

Since the drama over Christmas she's gotten slightly better about the dishwasher thing, and I've gone on "strike" so now mom is doing ALL the kitchen clean-up. I made an exception this week b/c Cousin was out of town, but now that she's back I'm on strike again. Strike means I will put my dishes in the dishwasher but I won't unload it, and if it's full I'll put them in the sink. I will wash the pots and pans I cook with, but only those.
