I've been driving legally for over forty years and for 20+ years have had a daily commute that has never been less than 80 miles (round trip). And I do a lot of non-work driving because I like to go places and see people. In all this time and in all those miles driven, I have never made contact with a deer.
Until today...when one ran up out of a ditch and sort of body slammed the passenger side of my Prius. The mirror broke free of the car and was dangling by wires and there is a shallow dent in each door. The car remains driveable although the blind spot on the passenger's side is bigger now
I have an estimate of $335 to replace the mirror and VGpa can probably pull the dents out with a plunger.
As far as I know, the deer left the scene under his own power. I didn't stop to check on him and he didn't stop to check on me.
So...have YOU ever hit or been hit by a deer? Let's hear your stories....
I've never hit a deer, but I know a couple people who have. Sounds like you and the deer were lucky - the ones I know both the cars and the deer were totalled.
I've never hit a deer... but I was in a car once that hit a HUGE bird (killed the bird, destroyed the front end of the car). We all think the bird may have been blind or something because it was headed straight for us when we impacted. Due to traffic at the time we couldn't avoid it.

I was passing a turkey farm when a wild turkey flew in front of the car (parents) I was driving. He broke the grill and flew off, never did find him. I went to my parents' home, told my mom what had happened and called the dealership my dad liked. While in the meantime, my sister borrowed the car, went to the grocery store which is where my dad saw the damage when he stopped to pick up their mail (grocery store and post office next to each other). He reamed my sister out for it until she convinced him she did not do it. He then came home and started to ream me out. I told him the grill was $50 for the part and $25 to install at the dealership. He stopped reaming me because I had it handled. Though he did ask where the turkey was as we could have had wild turkey for dinner that night.
one time coming home from work an Antelope crashed into the side of my DH's car dented the door, ripped drivers mirror off and sprinted away...was my DH mad!
byt thank goodness in his and yours no one was hurt, cars can be replacwed, people can't~

Never hit one, but have had a few jump out unexpectedly. I've also pass a lot of dead ones on the roads. There are wooded areas near where I live and the deer population has really gotten out of hand. The poor things are a menace to themselves and others.
Glad it was only the car that got damaged and not you, AG.
I have come super close to hitting one a couple times. My mom lives in the country and they are always crossing the road out there and even here in the city suburbs you see them just not as much. I am glad you are okay. Its scary for sure. The trick is always be looking kinda toward the woods treeline on the side of the road keeping an eye out for them and if you see one stop and wait because they usually cross in packs.
Yup. Maybe 8 or 10 years ago, I was driving our van, DH and DS2 were asleep. It was a winding road in southern Ohio (we were going to Hilton Head). It was 1:00 or 2:00 a.m.
The deer suddenly appeared & I calmly thought, "I'm going to hit that deer."
I caught it on the passenger side of the hood.
DH woke and thought we had blown a tire. I said, "No, it was a deer." He mumbled, "Oh, we're okay."
I had pulled to the shoulder by now. I made him get out. Headlight was gone, fender smashed, guts & hair everywhere.
Luckily, we were near an all-night gas station & an airport & were able to rent another vehicle.
I'm glad you didn't have more damage to your car and were not hurt. There are a lot of deer around here and it is very common to see dead ones at the edge of the road. Several of my friends have hit them, but I haven't yet.
Not too long ago I saw a deer laying completely across the right lane of the highway. Luckily there wasn't much traffic that morning and everyone was able to get over to the passing lane to get around it.
I just dont' get it. Why do deer panic and RUSH the large moving object? Why don't they run away?
Do not read the Yahoo answers for this - there's some sick people out there.
According to a scientist, their eyesight is geared for low light and can only really see 20 yards or so clearly. So they don't see you coming down the road, and if they're in the road the headlights blind them, so they freeze.

This reminds me that I have car/deer contact before.
I ran over a a dead deer that was laying in the middle of the road. It was late at night and in the middle of a sharp curve so I didn't see it until I had no way to avoid it.
I see deer two or three times a week on my o'dark thirty commute to work, usually in groups of three or four. I'm very glad the one that got me didn't have any companions who wanted to hit my car, too.
kina, insurance will cover all but $250 of it and the reason it's so high is because most of the passenger's side of the car will have to be re-painted once the dents are pulled out. Labor cost is about 60% of the estimate.
VGpa mentioned that I'm not as upset about this as he thought I would be over this. I reminded him that when my last car was seven years old, the only original exterior parts on the car were the driver's side door and the roof because of three major accidents (none of which happened when I was driving the car) and I was giving it up to buy my current car. I'm quite pleased this seven year old car is still in good shape (the dents aren't that bad really) and I can still drive it...hopefully for at least three more years.
