I agree it's not for everyone. But you are talking about a small percentage. There are outliers to everything. I'm not speaking about them.
The common experience for people who travel is that it broadens their world view and their horizons. Of course, it is possible to do that without traveling but I have rarely seen that. IRL.
When we watch we have. Been able to squeal and say we've been there. For me I like traveling to experience things first hand. It is one thing to read about the Maasi and quite another to eat a meal in their home they made out if cow poop
My world view is quite diverse. I was born into wealth, and that was lost, then we moved across the world where we were poor and made to feel unwelcome by a nasty few.
I've had to prioritize all my life. And that meant doing without any sort of luxury items, getting an education that would actually translate into a job and then working my ass off and having to prove my worth over and over again because I wasn't a white man.
So excuse me if my world view doesn't jive with yours now. I've been on both ends of the spectrum, but now that I am comfortable, I will do without a new car every few years, or a fancy coffee, or having the latest electronic gadget, so I can scratch my itch to travel.
It might not be a sacrifice everyone is willing to make, but for me, travel is on the top of my list before owning more "stuff".
I think the point was that for many people who don't have enough money to travel, it's not a matter of giving up fancy coffee - they already don't have fancy coffee - I think most people in the world don't have either fancy coffee or recreational travel .

I'm not trying to argue with anyone but I do think "I travel so much that it's shocking to encounter someone who doesn't" is kind of a funny perspective in that I would think that in traveling extensively you would encounter many others who do not (not that you need to encounter them to know that such people do exist)

I don't understand your logic Catus. People are friend with similar interests so if I travel a lot I will probably have friends with similar friends and interests. If I am touring the ruins in Greece I bet the people there are also travelers and I don't think you are likely to ask the locals how much they travel.
I guess it depends. I do meet local people when traveling and the topic of travel comes up sometimes, not others, but I think sometimes you can see from people's circumstances that they probably don't travel for recreation. I am not saying you should make assumptions about an individual but sometimes you can make an accurate assessment about the majority of people in a given situation. Besides which, isn't it kind of known that many people don't travel?
I think Americans have a reputation for not being that well traveled internationally. As for having friends with similar interests, I have friends who have traveled quite extensively and others who have traveled hardly at all / not at all internationally and don't see why they could not be friends with each other. But that, I guess, is something that varies from person to person as far as having friends with those kinds of similarities.
I guess it's more about experiencing and knowing that others live differently than you do, which it seems travel would increase in a general kind of way, but then again I agree with suomi that it's not always about what you've personally seen or experienced.

I have met people on my travels that obviously cannot afford to travel, but they are not my friends, just people I've met.
In 3rd world countries, it's kind of a given that most people have not traveled, nor can they afford to.
In the 1st world, I find it startling that some people have never had even one trip outside their country, unless of course, they are on public assistance. I don't have friends and acquaintances in that kind of financial straits.
I think it is known in the US but maybe not in Canada where Ana is from. I may have been shocked before 911 but I remember a stat back then that said less than 10% of Americans had passports.
I have to say I am surprised when affluent people haven't traveled. Wasn't it the case when George W Bush became preside he had only been to Canada and Mexico????? Yeah I was totally thinking WTF. And I bet i will get slammed for this when I say it but I expect republicans to travel outside the US LESS than democrats
ETA I meant less than deme not more. I find republicans to have a greater US focus and Dems a more world focus

Holy cow? Only 10% of Americans hold passports? In Canada that percentage is 70%! (I just looked it up)
A President that had never left North America? Oh, GWB! Well we can all agree that travel could nothing but help that man. How he got to be President is beyond me.
My father was in the military when I was growing up and we moved a lot. By the time I finished 6th grade, I had gone to nine different schools and I attended yet another school, albeit with the same kids, for junior & senior high. I grew weary of traveling and moving at a young age.
There are places outside the U.S. I'd like to visit and maybe some day I will if/when time, finances and desire to go all line up. But there's still a lot I'd like to see in this country, too. I can't say that I've ever had an irresistable urge to see something outside my own backyard....I'm surrounded by family and friends and I'm pretty content with that being my "world view".
eta: I was trying to reply to ana's earlier post to my post but the quote didn't work so this probably doesn't make much sense.

I totally get what you are saying AQ. Nothing wrong with being content and happy.
Not everyone has a desire to travel. Being a military kid probably dampened your enthusiasm. It sure did for my dh. I travel more than he does, but once I dragged him on a few trips, he started to enjoy it too.
There's nothing wrong with a bit of wanderlust, either, ana.
VGpa insisted we get passports so "that much was out of the way" in case we could manage a trip outside the U.S. He and a couple of friends are campaigning for a cruise and I know, sooner or later, I'll agree and they will drag me off on an "adventure". I'll be reluctant to go but I know I'll have fun because that's what always happens.
The hardest part of any trip for me seems to be stepping out my front door.....
Lol, you sound like my mom. My dad tried to get her to go on a cruise for years but she would never agree. Then my sisters and I along with my uncle decided we would do a trip together. A cruise seemed like a way to go. Then my mom insisted on going. One thing Mama hates is to be left out of family outings!
I've had a passport since I was 3 and it has never lapsed. I make sure dh's is always current too. I can't tell you how many times we have taken a last minute trip!
When we watch we have. Been able to squeal and say we've been there. For me I like traveling to experience things first hand. It is one thing to read about the Maasi and quite another to eat a meal in their home they made out if cow poop
I hope it was the HOME they made out of cow poop... LOL

I know people who travel to other countries but never leave the resort. I doubt they are expanding their horizons that much. For us, right now we just don't have the money to travel all over. We travel about 10 hours by car and that is about as far as we can afford to go. I did travel as a kid with my parents a lot though.
I have never traveled the western US. Just the East Coast and South.
I have never rode in a helicopter
I have never sky dived but I have bungee jumped
I have never been in a tanning bed
I have never owned a large dog

Yeah it was their home....what did you think it was the local restaurant?

Well... the sentence could work just as well without "in their home"... making it "eat a meal they made out of cow poop"
Sorry... it just struck me as funny.

I've ridden a helicopter; I thought I'd be scared, but it was a very smooth ride.
I've never been in a tanning bed.
I've never painted or wall-papered a room.
I've never met a cheese I didn't like (except for pepper jack!).
Richard where I am from only girls play field hockey. Now I know many countries outside the US have men's field hockey but I did not know it was popular in the states

It was in middle school, mixed phys-ed class... everyone could play field hockey... girls couldn't play football (not ability wise... it was a "not allowed because of {insert stupid reason here}" thing.

Funny, boys didn't play field hockey in my area but all the girls played ice hockey and football. But the girls played flag football. We never did the tackle thing.
had a broken bone
killed an animal, or seen on killed
fired a gun
seen the Alamo (and it's not on my list of things to see, funnily!)
slept in a home where a gun was present

That you know of with the gun one. It is entirely possible you have and did not know it. Unless your entire life you asked at every house you slept at and trusted their answer as truthful-you can not really have no way for knowing for sure. I have known plenty of people with guns that don't seem like the type to own one, but do. Including my extremely democratic father.
I have never ice skated on a lake or pond or river. I would be way too scared even if the ice was frozen safely solid. I have just seen too many movies of people falling through ice to do that. Ice skating rinks is all I am comfortable with.

I'm pretty sure BA. We live in Canada and it's very rare for someone to own a gun. And I would have to know someone pretty darn well to sleep over at their house.

I have never said FU to someone seriously.
I have never yelled or raised my voice to either husband
I have never personally attacked someone verbally or of course physically
Since I left my mother's home as a teen never ate any sort of squash
Never given someone the finger while driving
Never told anyone to shut up
I have seen the Alamo and you have not missed anything.
This.
The only time I slept in a house with a gun and fired a gun on the same trip. My anti-gun position is still firmly intact. :) (My hosts were sure that once I saw how much fun they were I'd be swayed to team firearms)
I've raised my voice as part of an emotional discussion with my husband, but I've never 'yelled' at him.
I've never given anyone the finger while driving, though I've been sorely tempted in one particular city multiple times.
I've never attacked anyone verbally or physically.
I've never told my father I have a tattoo. 20 years so far...
I've never watched the Bachelor, Bachelorette, etc.

I can't say never to those 42; except never having personally attacked someone verbally or physically, or told anyone FU seriously.
I have a temper that has calmed down with age, but by no means is it gone!
I have very little temper I marvel at people on the boards who flip out and personally attack people and kind of lose their minds, I have pretty good self control. You really seem to as well.
I have never taken antibiotics
I have never had a job that did not pay for my healthcare
I have never slept naked
I have never used "toys"
I never leave the house without a wedding ring on (if I do I will drive back to my home and get it)
