Snapping Turtle in our yard
Permalink

This morning we spotted this snapping turtle not ten feet from the side of our house.  Penelope was quite interested, so she got grounded to the house til he moves on.  He's taking his time about it though. He has only moved about six inches in two hours. He does not seem to realize we do not have any cute girl turtles for him to meet.

Oh, no!

We had one outside the fence about 3 years ago. His beak can do A LOT of damage.

It was early morning. I screamed for DH. That thing's neck was SO long.

I'd hurry him along... with a shovel.

(no, I wouldn't bash in his shell... I'd pick him up in the shovel and carry him WAY off my property in the direction he was headed)

He finally did move along. The pictures make them look about the same size, but the turtle was much bigger than Penelope. My husband thought he'd try to pick it up with a shovel, but he was afraid he'd have to hold the handle a little closer to the turtle than he was comfortable. Flan, the first thing I did when I saw it was yell for my husband, too. Then I told him that we had to move!

DH put on work gloves & scooped up the turtle with a big shovel.

Turtle was NOT happy and kept jumping off, but he finally got it away from our fence (and 2 curious dogs).

years ago my two oldest sons came home from the local pond with one in a back pack! I was amazed their fingers were intact after I realized it was a snapping turtle. they put it in my daughters little hard sided swimming pool. (at this time I thought it was just a turtle) the silly think ripped the swimming pool to threads and was gone from our yard by morning. We lived out of town so I was not worried about neighbors getting *attacked* but told them no more turtles!

they can be mean things for sure

well with an ambulance to be prepared for anything.

but best to just watch him meander out of yard, or assist with shovel as peep above said

My SD shoots snapping turtles if he sees any on their property. They have fish and occasionally ducks in their pond so they don't want snapping turtles in there eating them. I love turtles. But not so much the snapping ones.

We have them wander through every year. My husband said the bigger ones run off the smaller males and they are just looking for a pond of their own. He was pretty fast with the snap, so that's why we let him leave on his own speed.

 Hahaha

I've never seen one of those IRL so I'd be the fool that would try to pet the thing.

MD can attest to my desire to pet all the things, I keep asking her to pet the baby calf.

I was amazed at how LONG his neck was (city girl here). He reached back & it traveled the length of his shell...quick, too!

I think you'd better stick to petting a calf.

Penelope is adorable! We get turtles in the lake at nearby park. They will swim right by you. Every now and then it's a snapper but they usually leave you alone if you don't try to pick them up.
