About a month ago, my elderly across-the-street neighbor called one night and said she saw flashlights at the end of the driveway between our house and the church. I looked out the window and didn't see a thing, nor did PM. Dot was very worried that the badly-behaved teenagers on the hill were out back causing trouble. To ease her mind, PM walked around the church, went inside and checked the doors, etc., but found nothing.
Yesterday after the service, Dot tells me she saw the lights three times last week, between 10:15 and 10:30. So, last night, I gathered up my camera, binoculars, cell phone, and iPod and sat in her yard across from where she's been seeing these lights.
I got nuthin'. The possibilities are a) reflections off something, like deer eyeballs, b) Dot is having some sort of eye problem, which needs checked out ASAP, c) neighbor kids really are out there or d) ghosts.
I'm guessing it's A, although I do believe in ghosts and there IS a cemetary next to the church with graves dating back to before the Civil War. I'm probably going to skip the vigil tonight, but I'll be back out there tomorrow, hopefully with an answer that will soothe Dot's mind.

It's very kind of you to go to so much trouble to ease your neighbor's concerns. Can you be seen at your lookout point? If it's the kids, they won't show up if they know they're being watched, I would bet.
Yes, I can be seen, but from the additional info she gave me today, I don't think it's the neighbors. The main road curves around, so that in winter, we can see the houses there. From the way Dot described the lights today, it sounds like either headlights or people spotting deer from that direction. If they are causing trouble from that direction, I can't be seen. I might camp out *in* the church later this week - I definitely won't be seen there.

Perhaps it is something that can be seen only from the angle of her house? It is very nice of you to look out for your neighbor like that. I hope you can figure it out. Can we just call you Nancy Drew, Girl Slueth?
that is nice of you to help out your neighbor. Searching for ghosts is cool but I get paranoid and would start freaking out if I was out there all alone.
