I about fainted when I watched the weather on the news this weekend and realized that last year at this time we were setting our records of 106 degrees for that day. Back to feeling a bit better about our temps right now for sure.
I had my first day off yesterday. I am kind of regretting not going to hometown to visit my father's grave but I guess in reality time and space mean nothing to those passed. I think about him pretty much daily but I still want to make sure I go make a visit to check on the grave site.
Got my yearly review today and found out I got a raise on top of the huge jump in salary after getting my new position about 2 months ago. I am now making more than my husband and I made together last year (he was out of work for 6 months). All that hard work is finally paying off. Yay!

Congrats!
Thanks!

It is a celebration of summer solstice. It is one of the biggest holidays here. It is celebrated this Friday with decorating (with flowers and greenery), raising and dancing around a maypole. Traditional music is played and some people wear folk costumes.
There are other traditions surrounding it, for example, Midsummer Eve is supposedly a good night to perform rituals to look into the future. If you pick a bouquet of seven or nine different flowers and put them under your pillow you will dream about your future spouse.
The traditional food includes the year’s first potatoes, pickled herring, sour cream, beer and snaps and then strawberries for dessert.
Will there be a bonfire too? I wish I weren't moving this weekend...I'd love to have a midsummer's day thing with a fire, much wine and some good munchies.
Well crap, I have Japanese beetles desimating my miniature rose bushes and basil.
The good news is they drown easily. The bad news is I don't like touching bugs and half the time they fly away when I approach with my stick and jar of water.
Snails and slugs are so gross! We have a few of those too. I saw an article in the paper about the beetle traps and the scientist had caught thousands. They are just beginning to be a problem in the midwest the last year or so.
It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't several days in a row. Your climate is just about as bad as Missouri's.
We had our parking lot at work resurfaced last year with some sort of black sealant. It really soaks up the heat. When I got in the car at 4:30 the temperature gauge on my dash said it was 115. It cooled down six degrees when I got out on the street after a couple of blocks.
Last year we had 90 straight days of 100+ degrees. Luckily we have not started that run this year but the last two days were record temps for the dates.
I am trying to lose a few pounds for the past few months, but the scale doesn't budge. How did you do it?
I lived on powdered iced tea mixes - that was my favorite drink. That was the first thing to go - now I drink brewed iced tea with lemon & splenda sometimes, but I prefer water with 4C flavor packets. Today I brought fruit punch with me and it's yummy! Zero calories, sweetened with splenda and 100% vitamin C.
But I don't go nuts with it - I have to have creamer in my coffee - DH & I like the flavored ones, so I just get the fat free versions (they have sugar), because the sugar free versions aren't that tasty (to me).
Here's a typical day for me:
breakfast is either Quaker Oats Weight Control instant oatmeal (flavored) or a bowl of cold cereal like Honey Bunches of Oats, a half a glass of juice (to take my vitamin & bc pill) and one or two cups of coffee with fat free creamer. I eat breakfast around 6:30.
I have fruit for snack around 10 a.m. - either fresh or a canned - I get peaches or pears "no sugar added" or pineapples in 100% juice.
Lunch is around 1 and I have either Healthy Choice soup, a salad with chicken or a sandwich (today I have low fat/sodium deli ham on Weight Watchers whole wheat bread with mustard and cheese - I don't compromise on my cheese - I love Cooper's sharp).
When I get home around 4:30 if I'm hungry I'll have a snack of fat free caramel rice cakes with some peanut butter.
Then dinner is when DH gets home - 7:30 - and I'll have either some chicken & veggies with either brown rice or a half a baked potatoe or a salad with chicken, or a turkey hot dog with veggies.
Right before my monthly friend visits I crave mac & cheese or spaghetti so I don't deprive myself - I just measure my portions.
And when I want ice cream - I have a Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich.
I could have lost more, I know that for sure, but I decided to not deprive myself and then end up stuffing myself.
On payday Fridays we like to order take out. DH is a pizza fan, but I'm a snob about it, which is good because I don't go nuts - we only get my favorite a few times a year because it's not near where we live. So when DH gets pizza, I order a chicken cheese steak hoagie (6 inch) or when I'm in need of pasta, I'll get take out spaghetti & maybe chicken parm.
So - in other words - sorry to be so long winded - eat what you want, just cut back and try to get rid of as much sugar as you can. And the drinks are the worst for sugar. I HATE diet soda, but when I want soda, I can deal with Pepsi Next with lemon - it's somewhere in between real soda & diet.
OH! And 5 or 6 small meals/snacks over 2 or 3 big ones works too. I don't feel hungry and usually I eat because I know it's time to eat. After work is the only time I ever really felt hungry in the beginning but now I usually don't feel too hungry when I get home.

FRAED, everytime I tell my doctor I need to go on a diet, he say "No your portions need to go on a diet". He does not believe in dieting only portion control so you have the right approach (at least according to him).

I think that is the key. Because if you say "oh no more pizza for me" or whatever it is you really like, then you'll end up binging and then being mad at yourself and give up. I have days I eat way more than what I wrote above, but I just get back on track the next day. My mom took us out for dinner last week to a great Italian restaurant. I was not about to just eat a salad. LOL!
Smaller portions and less sugar & fat where possible should work.
DH & I try to go for a walk every Sunday for about an hour & a half and most lunches my friend & I go for a short walk, but with the heat the way it is, I'm nervous about walking after my fainting "episode" from a few weeks ago..........
